We have all been there. That moment when a police car pulls up behind us. Your eyes dart back and forth in the rearview mirror, your hands grip the steering wheel a little tighter, your foot magically becomes lighter on the gas. This is something that we all can relate to. Now add in all the memories in recent years that have been replayed in the media over and over of African Americans interaction with law enforcement. That adds an extra layer to the situation.
The idea for BTSD came to me after the Walter Scott incident in 2015. I was taken aback by how much mainstream media normalized airing an actual murder on television during all times of the day. I began to wonder what kind of effect viewing his murder along with countless others would have on people of all ages and colors. Does it make African Americans more defensive when they’re out in public? Doesn’t it make people who are not African American more offensive when encountering African Americans? Was there a trickle down psychological effect that stems from these incidents?
In this story, we show how a simple evening grocery store run can turn into a psychological nightmare for our main character. This is not your typical “driving while black” story but it is a story we all can relate to who’s goal is to spark dialogue amongst us all
I have assembled a group of professional, award-winning filmmakers who share the same passion I have to tell this story. With your contribution, we will be able to do this story justice and shine a light on this important issue.
