The project

Bullied to Death is an independent Experimental Feature Film aimed at developing new communication routes intertwining cinema, photography and performing arts and striking an emotional chord with the audience.

The images / ideas of the film are inspired by the true story of  14-year-old "J.R."  from Buffalo, New York, who committed suicide in 2011 after facing severe bullying episodes at school and on the web, as a result of his coming out about his sexuality.

It is a story of solitude and denied redemption, which can apply to any one of us. The writer illustrates the story by adopting atypical narrative schemes while representing an overall universality. He uses different languages and genres, thus creating a sensorial, yet not didactic, movie that can be experienced through our visual senses.

Thanks to the universality of the emotions experienced in the events pertaining to the young boy, the director has set the story in an undefined space-time frame, thus working with actors/performers who speak alternately as the voice-over. This is the reason why the movie will be shot entirely in English to reach the largest possible audience.

Briefly, the synopsis of our project is a journey through the story of a teenager who committed suicide in a careless, inadequate society  which is confused, cruel, and unable to solve the increasing violence that deviates towards pathology especially when gender-related matters are at stake. The movie is without a precise place identification, thus representing all the possible places where these tragedies can happen. Actually, the whole world represents the ideal stage to set the film.

Il progetto

Bullied to Death è un progetto cinematografico sperimentale e indipendente, che mira a utilizzare nuove strade comunicative tra cinema, fotografia e arti performative, per colpire emozionalmente lo spettatore. Le immagini-suggestioni del film prendono spunto dalla vera storia del giovane J.R., quattordicenne di Buffalo suicidatosi nel settembre del 2011, dopo i ripetuti atti di bullismo, a scuola e sul web, cui veniva sottoposto in seguito al suo coming out.

Una storia dal respiro universale di solitudine e di riscatto negato. È questa universalità che spinge l’autore a raccontare i fatti attraverso schemi narrativi atipici, utilizzando generi e linguaggi diversi, puntando a creare un film sensoriale, non didascalico, la cui essenza va colta attraverso una visione fisica.

L’universalità dei sentimenti abbracciati dalla vicenda del giovane statunitense consente al regista di ambientare la narrazione in uno spazio tempo non definito, lavorando con attori-performer che si alternano incarnando la voce narrante.

Per lo stesso motivo l’intero film verrà girato in lingua inglese per raggiungere un pubblico più ampio possibile.

Questa in sintesi la sinossi del nostro progetto: un percorso attraverso la storia di un adolescente morto suicida all’ombra di una società inadeguata, confusa e crudele che non riesce a porre rimedio all’incremento e relativo sconfinamento patologico della violenza, in particolare di genere. Il film non identifica alcun luogo preciso ma rappresenta tutti i luoghi in cui queste tragedie accadono. In questo senso è un film ambientato, letteralmente, nel mondo.

The Author

Giovanni Coda is a director, video-artist, and photographer from Cagliari, Sardinia. He began his artistic career in literature and theatre scenes, and in 1996 founded V-art (Festival Internazionale Immagine d’Autore), a shorts festival focused on the video art field. Among the jury members, Gianni Toti, Enrico Ghezzi and Leonardo Carrano. In 2005, he supervised the review of the Electroacoustic Music Festival, “Confluencias” in Huelva. Since 2003, he has supervised the audiovisual section of festival “Incanti”, a figure theatre and other innovative experimental works, in Turin.

Among the international museums and exhibitions where his installations of photography and videoarts were set we can list the Video Art Biennale in Venice and Milan, the Ayoama University in Tokyo, the Watermans Arts Centre in London, the Maison d’Italie in Paris, the Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Teatro Vittorio in Rome and many others.

In his artist background, we find many works of photography, figurative painting, electronic art and performances awarded in Italy and abroad; moreover, his filmography counts with, among others: L’Ombra del Ricordo (1996), Il passeggero (1998), Serafina (2002), Big Talk (2005), Brighteness (2012).

In 2013 he released his first feature film, The Naked Rose, inspired by Pierre Seel’s life, who was deported in a concentration camp when he was 17 years old since classified as homosexual. The movie, boasting more than twenty official selection in festivals all over the world, was awarded the best feature film prize at the Social Justice Film Festival 2013 in Seattle. Moreover, he won the Film For Peace Award at the Gothenburg Indie Film Fest 2014, the Best International Film Award at the 15th Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF) in 2014, the Gold Award at the Documentary & Short International Movie Award in 2014, Jakarta, Indonesia.

He is currently working at the production of Bullied to Death, the second chapter of the trilogy that began with The Naked Rose.

L’Autore

Giovanni Coda è un regista, videoartista e fotografo cagliaritano. Dopo l’esordio letterario e teatrale, nel 1996 fonda il V-art (Festival Internazionale Immagine d’Autore), festival di cortometraggi con particolare attenzione alla video arte, che avrà come giurati artisti e critici del calibro di Gianni Toti, Enrico Ghezzi e Leonardo Carrano. Nel 2005 cura la Rassegna audiovisiva del Festival di Musica Elettroacustica “Confluencias” di Huelva. Dal 2003 è curatore della sezione audiovisiva del Festival “Incanti” Teatro di figura e altre sperimentazioni di Torino.

È autore di installazioni di fotografia e videoarte in musei e mostre internazionali tra cui la Biennale di videoarte a Venezia e Milano, l’Ayoama University di Tokyo, il Watermans Arts Centre di Londra, la Maison d’Italie a Parigi, il Museo Reina Sofia di Madrid, il Teatro Vittorio di Roma e altri.Il suo curriculum vanta una vasta lista di opere di fotografia, pittura, arte elettronica e performance premiate in Italia e all’Estero.Dalla sua filmografia citiamo tra gli altri L’Ombra del Ricordo (1996), Il passeggero (1998), Serafina (2002), Big Talk (2005), Brighteness (2012).

Nel 2013 realizza il suo primo lungometraggio, Il rosa nudo, ispirato alla vita di Pierre Seel, deportato in un campo di concentramento all’età di 17 anni poiché schedato come omosessuale. Il film, che vanta più di venti selezioni ufficiali in festival di tutto il mondo, si è aggiudicato(tra i tanti) il premio per il miglior lungometraggio al Social Justice Film Festival 2013 di Seattle, il premio Film For Peace Award al Gothenburg Indie Film Fest 2014, il Best International Film Award al 15° Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF) 2014, il Gold Award al Documentary & Short International Movie Award 2014, Jakarta, Indonesia.

Sheri Mann, North American actress and acting teacher, and her son Tendal Mann, contributed to the movie by giving their support and being actively part of the cast as leading actors.

Why crowdfunding?

It was possible, thanks to the great success of previous work of the director The Naked Rose, to support the pre-production and the first weeks of shooting of Bullied to Death. In order to completely finance all post-production and distribution expenses, we have decided to launch this crowdfunding campaign.

Perché il crowdfunding

Grazie al grande successo de Il Rosa Nudo, precedente lavoro del regista, è stato possibile affrontare la pre-produzione e le prime settimane di lavorazione di Bullied to Death. Ma per riuscire a coprire la restante parte dei costi di post produzione e distribuzione abbiamo deciso di lanciare questa campagna di crowdfunding.

Contiamo sul vostro supporto, per raccontare una storia in grado di colpire tutte le coscienze, attraverso la messa in scena di azioni e sentimenti che, sebbene spesso visti come estranei, toccano ognuno di noi nel profondo.
