Hey what's up, my name is Kevin. But this is not about me - it's about you - about people - it's about love. One of the greatest things I've learned in my life is the importance of compassion to others.
A few weeks ago, due to the random curves of life, my pride, and over-priced hotel rooms, I decided to grab my backpack and live homeless, for lack of a better term, for about 10 days in Seattle. I have money, I could afford to go somewhere but I thought it would be an interesting way to see, maybe just a tiny glimpse of what some of these people are going through. In those days, I met prostitutes, war vets, very talented singers and musicians, dancers, drug addicts, Elle Fitzgerald re-incarnated, Captain America, people of all sorts.
People.
These people didn't have homes and some didn't even have a sleeping bag. Some of these people, like we all assume, want money for drugs, yes. In my experience more than half of the people I met were not looking to get high, they needed money for a sleeping bag, to make a phone call, to get a new ID, to get some food.
To get some food.
So many of these people are ignored, and not seen for who they are - they are human beings. WE ARE ALL human beings. So one day - I was inspired to give back - give back what I could. So I went to McDonald's - bought 10 cheeseburgers and started walking down 5th Avenue in downtown Seattle. I got rid of those 10 cheeseburgers in less then 15 minutes.
I walk up to anyone that appears to be homeless. Some have signs, some don't, and I ask if they are hungry. I give them a cheeseburger, sometimes 2, a lot will only take one and say to give it to the next person.
Compassion.
Then I try to give them some human touch, eye contact, and I tell them to stay positive, keep hope, and that I love you - the world loves you. I continued on this trend, handing out about 15-25 cheeseburgers 3-6 times a week. It's felt great but now I need your help...
Here is the mission:
To raise $1,000 so we can get 30 cheeseburgers to 30 people who live on the streets for 30 consecutive days. A cheeseburger is $1.00 plus tax. If we raise more money than $1,000 I will use that for apples, bananas, and more healthier options. I know cheeseburgers aren't the best but it's a hot meal and usually makes these hungry people smile. And smiling is the best thing you can do with your day. Thank you for watching and if you don't have money to donate, go give your Mom a hug and your Dad a high five and tell your family and friends you love them and be nice to the next homeless person you see - because that homeless person is you - it's me - its the world - we are all people - we must love another!
Happy trails!
