What's the History of Burning Issue?

Launched at Festival 23, the inaugural edition of Burning Issue had a clear purpose: it was an invocation to 'Total Burn'. Success was immediate as at 11pm on Saturday 23rd July 2016 the festival became the first ever to feature a Ritual Mass Burn. Three months later on 23rd October, an expanded 'Special Edition' Burning Issue was launched at London's first ever Ritual Mass Burn at The Cockpit in Marylebone. The culmination of these early incarnations of Burning Issue is the SUPER DELUXE edition that we are crowdfunding here. It will be the final manifestation of Burning Issue Vol One. 

What will the SUPER DELUXE edition be like?

Burning Issue is without doubt a completely unique idea for a magazine. The premise is that its readership consists exclusively of money burners (and other destroyers of currency) and it speaks directly to them, and to them only; non-burners are warned NOT TO READ the magazine due to its invocatory powers. From this position Burning Issue can offer its content without needing to rationalize it or without subsuming money burning to the capitalist mode of production and economic cost/benefit modes of thinking.

Because of its approach the first two editions attracted interest from writers, artists and academics from around the world. There is amongst them a deep shared interest in radical new ways of approaching reality based around 'magical thinking'. And within Burning Issue and Money Burning generally this combines with the universal human fascination with Ritual Sacrifice - which according to some views is the most ancient and primal aspect of civilization itself. 

As the Crowdfund progresses we will release details of the amazing contributions we have lined up over the past year for the SUPER DELUXE edition.

What do you need the money for?

The £5000 we are seeking will be used to fund the production of 500 copies of a 100 page + full colour glossy magazine. 

We sold several hundred copies across the first two editions. They were 28 and 44 pages respectively and - although we were pleased with the result - they were prepared 'on the cheap'. We didn't even have a copy of Indesign (the software used by most magazine publishers). This time we want to do justice to the brilliant writing, photography and artwork that we are featuring. While Jon Harris will remain in Editorial Control, two key individuals are lending their valuable expertise to the project. Jonathan Greet (photographer/film-maker/graphic designer) will be helping with production and Michelle Olley (writer/editor) will be helping with sub-editing.

What will I get?

We've worked hard to create a range of perks to entice your contributions. The key one is of course the magazine itself. We've kept the price the same as its always been - £10. But we're also offering posters, the Church of the Cosmic Burn Crew T-Shirt, hardback copies of The Money Burner's Manual and two beautiful 'Money Burner Gift Sets'. Additionally, for the more business minded Burner we are offering half and full page advertising in return for a larger contribution. 

And of course, what you'll be contributing towards will be much more than a magazine. What we are creating here is a new possibility. It is undeniable that by burning money we fundamentally change our relationship to it. On one level we are simply burning a piece of paper, but on another we are re-configuring the way we are with the central totem of capitalism and the modern world. We can change money by changing the way we are with it. And if we do that, we can change the social and economic structures we build around it.
