Hail and well met! Just beyond lies the road to New Avendale, a place ripe with tales of great treasure and adventure to be had. Ready your blade and keep your wits about you, for there is no telling what perils you may come across on your journey. Afraid? Don't be! Rumor has it those who venture there encounter such prosperity they choose to abandon all that they know, never to return to their former lives. Will you be amongst them, finding riches and glory, or continue to go forth with your daily drudgery?

Editor's Update 1: We're 5 days in and have hit the $300 mark! A lot of effort has been put in to spread the word of our campaign through various social media and web forums, but we haven't hit that first $1,000 milestone yet!

Editor's Update 2: Just over 2 weeks into our campaign and we've surpassed the $350 mark! Things may have slowed down, but it hasn't discouraged us, as we have spoken to a lot of people who have promised donations at the end of this month!

Editor's Update 3: 3 weeks in, and though things seemed to have hit a bit of a winter lull, that hasn't gotten our spirits down! We're still counting on that promised support, and spreading the word of our campaign to any who are willing to hear it.

Editor's Update - Halfway Point: We are officially at the halfway point in our campaign. Extra effort is being put in now to spread the word in order to reach our goal. Lately, we have been making preparations for our first event, scheduled for this upcoming May. Various storylines and characters have already been created to help the world of Caeloras seem like more of a real place than just someone's creative ideas written on paper. We will forever be indebted to those who have supported us thus far, and are still reaching out to those around us for donations and help with making our project known to others.

Welcome to Caeloras Live Action Roleplaying! We are a new LARP beginning in the New England area looking to raise funds to make our dream literally come alive. Our goal is to raise enough money to pay for supplies and facilities to run a Live Action Roleplaying Game. Why do we want to run a LARP? It is something we are incredibly passionate about and have been involved in for the past several years. Some members of our staff have been part of the LARP community for over a decade. A game of our own has always been something of a dream, but things just hadn't fallen into place to make it happen until now, and we are ready to make Caeloras part of the New England LARP community.

Our goal is simple - we want to share, with anyone willing to participate, one of the greatest experiences a person can ever be a part of. While many look at Live Action Roleplaying from the outside with skepticism, no one who attends ever leaves with those same feelings. It truly is a world all its own, and these worlds are given life by those who enter and leave their mark on them. I have never met anyone who has been to a LARP who didn't have at least one good, exciting story to tell, even if they only attended one event.

In a day where social interaction is at an all-time low, we feel Live Action Roleplaying provides great opportunities for those looking for a creative outlet that lets them meet new people. Caeloras opens up social gateways into an entirely new world of people in a community you may have never known even existed. Couple that with the obvious physical benefits of spending a weekend getting exercise and fresh air running around in the woods and you've practically got yourself the makings of an after-school special. The most important thing, we feel, that everyone at Caeloras gets after the event is over is the friendships and memories, because no matter how long it is between the events themselves, when you're lying in bed at night thinking about what you did that weekend, no one can take that from you. That is why we're doing this, the great memories we all have from our years of participating in other LARPs, when we look back and think about what a great time we once had, we want to be able to give that same opportunity to others.

When it's all said and done, our mission is to provide a quality experience for those wishing to step into the world of Caeloras. To do so, we need to acquire props, costuming, boffer-safe weapons - everything necessary to make our players really feel as if they are in a medieval fantasy world. Caeloras coming to life would be a literal dream come true for us, being able to share some of the greatest experiences of our own lives with others.

A LARP (Live Action Roleplaying) is a game in which people assume the role of a character in a fictional setting. Unlike in video games, or tabletop games, you physically act out every action your character takes. While at a LARP, you are your character, and everyone you interact with is a different person than they are in the real world. Whether you are swinging a sword, crawling through a dungeon module, or enjoying a story by firelight, you will be experiencing it all first hand. There is no one to describe what is happening to you – what you see is what you get. There are no dice, no turn-based combat, and no one there to ask you what your next action is going to be. Everything that you do at Caeloras is totally in your hands. In a LARP, you ARE the game.

Once 'Game On!' is called, you are your character until the game is over. Everywhere in the camp is in-game, except for official cast areas, the bathroom facilities, and the space underneath your bed (please do not store in-game items or try to hide here!). You are expected to stay in character as much as possible throughout the weekend. We do not want to walk into a cabin and hear people talking about the latest movie or video game, and we absolutely do not want to see people talking on cellular phones. If you can, please just leave your phone off and in your car. If you absolutely must have your phone with you, please keep the sound off, and keep it out of sight.
Caeloras Live Action Roleplaying takes place in a high fantasy setting in the world of Caeloras. While some cliche elements of classic literature and the roleplaying genre are present, do not be surprised if some things are completely different than what you are used to. We have tried our best to provide a unique and interesting world that is constantly causing our players to think before they swing, and feel that with our character system, pantheon, and world setting, we have accomplished that.

The choice is now yours to make whether you want to be a player character (PC) or non-player character (NPC). A PC is a character that you create yourself, choosing the race, skills, and all other aspects. You will be your character from the start of the event until the end, playing the same character throughout the course of the campaign (unless something unfortunate happens), gaining character points and advancing your character how you see fit. As a PC, you are responsible for paying an entrance fee, acquiring your own costuming, weapons, any props you wish to use, everything except for dinner on Saturday night. The PC is the customer at a LARP, they are the ones who pay to play, they are who the stories are written for, and they are the ones who become the heroes.

An NPC, or cast member, is the lifeblood of any LARP, and Caeloras is no different. As an NPC, you help to create the game each event, and without you, the game could not function. From playing monsters to traveling merchants to farmers just passing through the tavern, no LARP could run without its NPCs. As a member of the cast, Caeloras provides everything you will need throughout the weekend, all you need to bring is basic black clothing and your sleep and hygiene gear. We supply your food, your snacks (though it doesn't hurt to bring some extra if you're particular about what you like), your costuming, and your weapons. The cast is responsible for making the stories we have written come to life in a way that the players can interact with them and solve the puzzles and problems that come along with them. Perhaps you will be a band of skeletons being led by a Necromancer, and the town needs to run them out, but must first defeat the evil mage to prevent him from continually summoning his undead minions, or maybe two rival Orc tribes plan to wage war in the middle of New Avendale, and a peace talk must be organized by the town before they get caught up in the mess. No matter what the plot is, the cast is there to make it happen.

For those who have never been, LARPing differs greatly from what you see in movies. It is more than just funny accents in the park with fantasy garb (clothing). Those who participate in Caeloras spend a full weekend at our site - a camp with cabins made to look like a rustic inn, a mess hall converted into a medieval tavern, trails full of monsters, puzzles, and mischief, campsites for those who wish to really rough it - the entire time taking the part of a character they create through out Character Creation System (found in the Caeloras Live Action Roleplaying rulebook). After everyone has arrived at the camp, unpacked their things, gotten into costume and checked in to receive their character card, a brief opening meeting is had, and then from Friday night until Saturday afternoon, the game is on, with no breaks or pauses. While the cast may not be in-character 100% of the time, the players are, and constantly interacting with each other, and those cast members who are out in the field taking on the role of a character or monster.

Caeloras is more than just talking with each other in costumes, though. Our staff dedicates countless hours when we don't have an event running to write rich, involved storylines for the players to  become a part of. We spend much of our free time creating the world and the events that happen within it. During an event, the staff organizes and runs these storylines, or 'plots', directing other cast members on how to make them come to life by instructing them as to what props they need or what characters they will need to dress as or what weapons they will need for combat.

How do we get to the point of the storylines and combat? Well, with Caeloras having a goal of starting in Spring of 2014, after we get funding and handle all of the insurance and business aspects and get our equipment, we get our site. A site for a LARP is often a scout or YMCA camp - the basic outline of these types of camps works well for turning the sleeping cabins into something that looks like it could pass off as an inn, and the mess halls often make for excellent taverns, with a few modest decorations added. Once we have our site, we can begin accepting player registrations. Should things work out accordingly and we do our job advertising our game and spreading the word, the total amount of player registration fees will be greater than what our monthly insurance, site fees, and basic operating costs will be. Our core staff of plot writers will then spend nearly all of their free time from that moment until 'Game On!' is called writing storylines and having meetings with other staff members to put out the best possible game scenario we are able to. Those of us who have staffed for LARPs previously know the sort of dedication it takes to run a successful game, and are prepared to make those kind of time sacrifices to make this game everything it can be and more.

It takes a lot to start any kind of business, and a LARP is no different. Aside from the various costuming and prop costs, there are a lot of unnoticed things like office supplies, food costs, facility fees, insurance, and the like that go into making a world come alive. While we have put a great deal of our own money into buying a lot of these things already, it's a big jump to start from the ground up. $12,000 sounds like a lot of money, and, quite frankly, it is, but it goes fast. What we need to do is make sure that when it does go, it's put into the right place to make sure the game we put out for people is something they want to keep playing.

  • A Wardrobe fit for a king - Well, maybe not for a king, more like for a horde of monsters, bandits, and whatever else we feel like throwing at our players to interact with and fight. We need to provide our cast volunteers with all of the necessary costuming to do what they need to do - provide an entertaining experience for the players attending each Caeloras event. This means we need various masks, makeup (including prosthetic ears, teeth, noses, etc), costume attire (including cloaks, robes, medieval period looking shirts, hats, pants, surcoats and the like), cloth tabards - things that will really get our players immersed in the world and make them feel like they are really there and involved with the stories and characters around them.

Masks - This is the main way in which our cast members transform themselves from everyday people into the creatures that inhabit Caeloras. They allow for a quick change from one character to another with very minimal cleanup. Masks are the most important piece of non-clothing costuming a LARP needs, and the most expensive. Things like Skeletons, Zombies, Orcs, Goblins and the like that we wish to send out on a frequent basis are much better suited to wear a mask that having our cast constantly putting on and washing off makeup repeatedly throughout the course of an event. As you can see in the picture below sampling some of our masks, we primarily use a variety of full-face latex masks to portray an assortment of creatures, but masks made of leather, cloth, and half-face masks all have their place at Caeloras.

Makeup - Cream makeup, pancake makeup, setting powder, fake blood, latex prosthetic pieces, wigs, spirit gum adhesive (and the ever so important remover counterpart), makeup applicators, liner pencils, and all other manner of cosmetics we can use to change someone's appearance. Makeup takes more time and skill than a mask, but the effects are much more appealing and impressive. Characters that use makeup are often not going to see as much combat as those in a mask, and have more of an intention of talking with players, which really gives the players a chance to see the effort and visual effects of the makeup. The most commonly used makeup at Caeloras is tubes of cream makeup, and will be what we will need to acquire the most of.

Costuming - Whether being bought outright or made from fabric we purchase ourselves and then cut and sew together, costuming is essential to a LARP. Even a simple piece of cloth cut into a tabard and tied at the waist with a sash can make all the difference in someone really seeing a cast member as a zombie roaming in the night, rather than just someone in a mask wearing a plain black t-shirt. While masks may be the most expensive equipment to acquire, costuming is definitely the most time-consuming. The costumes shown below were all hand-made by Nina, and with your help, we can buy materials for her to make many, many more!

  • An Arsenal - This statement is not an exaggeration. As we briefly mentioned earlier, combat at Caeloras takes place using safe padded 'boffer' style weapons constructed of PVC piping and foam insulation for padding, and, of course, duct tape. We will be creating these weapons ourselves, and need to purchase the materials to do so. The picture below shows several styles of boffer weapons, though imagination is the limit when designing your own weapon (as long as it is within the safety guidelines for Caeloras).

PVC Pipe - This serves as the literal core of our weapons. The PVC pipe is the base on which all other materials are applied. In order to build all of the swords, daggers, clubs, axes, hammers, maces, and everything else we need to make, we're going to need to purchase roughly 150 feet of PVC pipe from our local hardware store. It comes in 10 foot sections at a little under $2.00 per 10 feet.

Pipe Insulation Foam - The soft padding that gives our weapons enough cushioning to not cause harm when swung at someone when used properly. This foam goes directly over the pipe, as it normally would for it's standard construction use. We're looking to get around 100 feet of insulation foam. The stuff that meets our safety specifications can be tough to find, and we have only been able to locate it at 2 stores in the state. It's sold in 3 foot sections for a bit under $2.00 per 3 feet. In a bind, we can also use pool noodles, but they don't have the same durability.

'Open-Cell' Foam Padding - Basic craft foam cushioning is all this is. It is placed at the very end of a weapon to create a bit of extra, softer padding so if the weapon is thrust into someone, it doesn't hurt (what is known as a 'thrusting tip). This stuff can get kind of pricey, and every weapon we create needs to have its end covered in a 1" thick piece of this foam.

Duct Tape - A LARPers best friend! Duct tape has near unlimited uses at a LARP, but when it comes to making weapons, it's used to get that sword look on a blade by covering the insulation foam and making it go from beige to steel in color. Strips of duct tape are laid vertically along the blade until no foam can be seen anymore. The brand of duct tape we use to create weapons, due to it's weight, adhesiveness, and durability (you want something that isn't too heavy, but that won't fall off or fall apart all the time) comes in rolls of 55 yards for just under $5.00 for gray tape and 30 yards for $6.00 for colored tape (as some of our weapons will need to be made brown to represent wood or green to represent someone 'not using a weapon', but instead fighting with their 'fists').

There are also several tools used in the creation of a boffer weapon, but these have already been acquired out of pocket by our team over their LARP careers. Other various odds and ends such as electrical tape, rubber cement, friction tape will also be needed but are all already owned by our staff as well.

  • Props - Along with dressing the part, we need to make our site look the part. We want our players to walk into a dungeon module and think they really are in a dungeon. Props covers everything from tablecloths, lanterns and glowsticks to light up the night, treasure chests, custom made coin for the world of Caeloras, tarps made to look like the stone walls of a cave or dungeon - the possibilities here are endless!

  • Behind the Scenes Supplies - Along with all of the fancy costuming and weapons, a LARP needs other things to function - standard office supplies like paper, printer ink, pens, staples, and the like, we have to feed our attendees throughout the weekend, we need to keep a stocked first aid kit on site at all times.
  • Insurance - We need to have our own insurance coverage in the unfortunate event that someone does get hurt. LARPing is a full contact hobby, and accidents do, albeit rarely, happen. Should this be the case, we want ourselves and whoever the injured party is to be able to sleep easy at night knowing no one is going to go broke over a sprained ankle.
  • Facility & Storage - The biggest expense we have is our site fees. Each time we have an event, we need to rent the camp facility we hold it at, and we're going to need to put down a deposit months before the first event even happens. We're also going to need a place to store all of our props, costuming, and everything else, most likely a by purchasing a trailer.

Should we not reach our target funding goal, any money we do raise will be prioritized in the following way:

Most importantly, we have to have insurance to run the game at all, so that will be our first expense. After that, we will secure our desired game site for up to 3 months if possible. Anything left after that will be put into costuming, weaponry, and other supplies, and things will just have to be stored in our basement.

Below is a chart displaying our initial projected expenditures. We're hoping to raise enough money to cover 3 months worth of facility fees (the places we've been looking at average around $1500 a month to rent their site, and the trailer we're planning to buy should cost about $500). We'll be purchasing several dozen masks in addition to what we have already bought, and those can get pretty pricey, sometimes costing up to $30 a piece, and of course, we're going to have to pay for shipping fees on almost everything we buy. Almost all of our costuming will be hand-made by us, but fabric isn't always cheap, especially if we want to get durable materials that will last through combat and weather, yet still look authentic to the time period. The insurance we have looked at and will be going with has a rate of $1000 per year for the coverage we need, which we will have to pay up front before we host any events. Buying $300 worth of makeup, in reality, should last us several years. As far as props are concerned, that area is so broad we had to give that area a large budget to leave room for things like expensive tapestries should they actually become necessary to cover something modern-looking that cannot be moved on a wall in a building during an event. Basic office and first aid supplies should be covered by the projected budget as well as the donator perk rewards, as should weapon materials. There is an extra $750 not factored into this chart that will be taken by IndieGoGo as their fee for hosting this campaign. In the end, there will be a remaining $10 not covered by this chart that will get absorbed into whatever area needs it at the time.

In addition to all listed perks, anyone who donates to Caeloras Live Action Roleplaying will earn 1 Merit for every $1 US you give! What is a Merit, you ask? A Merit is our way of saying 'Thank You!' to those who go above and beyond to help our game. Normally, Merits are given to those who make donations of their time, by either helping set up the game site, or packing up after an even. Merits are also given for tangible donations of costuming, props, and even money. At Caeloras, Merits can be used for a number of things, such as extra Experience Points for your character, more money for your character, and other options that can be found in our official rulebook. Remember to keep checking back, because even though we will never remove a perk reward, there may be a period when we add a reward for a limited time!

Caeloras Live Action Roleplaying is ran by a team of dedicated LARP veterans with combined decades of experience. Co-created by Ryan Cahill & John LeBlanc, each with over 10 years experience in their own right, Caeloras aims to be a place to welcome both veterans of Live Action Roleplaying, as well as those just cutting their teeth in the roleplaying world.

Ryan Cahill (pictured above) has been a member of the New England LARP community since his freshman year of high school. He has over 10 years of experience as a LARPer on both the side of player and cast. Ryan participated as a player for years until making an important decision to switch to the side of staffing. Ever since he first set foot into this magical world of imagination and individualism, he knew it would be a huge part of his life. From that point, he forged friendships that have stood the test of time to even this day with others who still share those same interests. The memories that they have all created together, according to Ryan, are the best he has ever had, and hopes to help others create the same feeling with the start of Caeloras. Ryan's experience as a player lasted for years until he switched to the side of casting. This seemed to suit him well, as he has always had a love of writing, storytelling, and creating, as shown in his years of experience with tabletop games. For Ryan, if players aren't challenged and thinking, he isn't doing his job.

John LeBlanc (pictured above) met Ryan on the dark side of the cast at another game in 2007. Having previous experience as a player from years prior, John felt that being part of the cast felt more natural to him, and having always enjoyed writing on his own in his spare time, this position seemed to suit him perfectly. John has made an effort to hold himself to a standard on all plot writing projects to strive for challenge and player-control of the flow of the story. Sharing an already similar style of in-your-face, beat-'em-up writing, Ryan & John were already on the track to working well together. When Ryan first told John of his plans to set out on his own and start Caeloras, and asked John to help run the game, John said that he had been thinking for a while about wanting his own game, and that there was no one better he could see himself running it with.

Nina Krystofalski (pictured above) is an accomplished and accredited seamstress with formal training. Just recently joining the LARP community in 2012, she has been the main motivator behind the Caeloras project. According to Ryan, she has been his rock whenever he did not feel he was capable of getting something done, and she was always there to push him to do it, never once doubting him. Without Nina, Caeloras would still be a cluster of ideas, but today it is a world ready to come alive, and Ryan is thankful for every moment that he has with her, because without her his dream would never come alive. Though incredibly new to the roleplaying world, Nina has taken to it like a second life, creating costumes, characters, backstories, and plotlines with relative ease.

Rafael Molina (pictured above) met Ryan in 2003 through mutual friends. Through some heavy convincing, Rafael was turned towards the roleplaying world and immediately took to it. A US Army veteran, now accomplished professional performer with a background in production and business, Rafael is an essential part in the inner workings of Caeloras. He also harbors a diverse background ranging in several LARP, tabletop, and miniature war games.

Stephen Hall (pictured above) was introduced to boffer combat at fourteen, and built his first boffer weapon (a rather clunky warhammer with too much tape) not long thereafter. Thankfully for us, he has since gotten much better and is one of the main prop and weapon crafters for Caeloras. Occasionally dabbling with different LARPs through high school and college, he began playing regularly in 2004, with occasional stints as a staff member. Stephen enjoys the crafty side of the hobby, building boffers, armor, costuming, and other props. Recently, he has gotten hooked by 3D printing. Having built his own machine from the bolts up, Stephen has been exploring new ideas into what could be done with it for LARPing.

"LARPing really gave me a place when I didn't have one. I was an awkward kid in middle school and didn't really have all that many friends, and wasn't very good at talking to people. A couple guys I knew were getting into this LARP thing and told me to come along, so I did, and it literally opened up a whole new world for me. I met people that liked the same games I liked, the same music, the same TV shows, it's like I finally found a place to fit in. More so, LARPing gave me an incredible amount of self confidence while doing something I love doing. Whenever a group of us get together, no matter how long it has been, no matter what else we end up doing, the night always ends with reminiscing about those youthful days we had when we were first cutting our teeth as 'adventurers' at our first LARP, working our way through the ranks years later. They really are the greatest memories any of us have, and no matter how many times we tell the stories, or how many times those who weren't there have already heard them, it was such a great time for those of us that were there that everyone still gets so excited and just latches onto every word, wanting to hear what happens next again and again. That is what we want to create. That is what we want to share with everyone. An experience that, no matter what else may ever happen, that you can look back at it and say - 'I was a hero'."
