Cain Hill is a High production value low-budget feature horror film.
When a group of filmmakers decide to investigate an abandoned Asylum famed for its mysterious disappearances they soon discover the truth is far more horrific than they could have ever imagined.
Led by Director RICHARD MACKINTOSH, Producer LEONARD KINSTER the group plan to spend the weekend inside the walls of Cain Hill Psychiatric Hospital. Famous for the many unexplained disappearances and tales of a murder call CHESTER LOCKHART. The team aim to capture the truth behind the famous Cain Hill Asylum.
Once inside and set up they soon discover that the stories about Cain Hill aren’t just made up to bring in tourist and they are not alone. What first seemed like a routine shoot soon becomes a game of cat and mouse with a psychopath determined the kill the intruders.
Like the horrors of the 70’s; dripping with tension, suspense, dread and fear.
Cain Hill is a modern horror with a classic style that will introduce the world to a whole new monster.
The horror genre today is full of films that rely all too much on cheap scare tactics and being as gory as they possibly can be.
Long gone are the days of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street.
Instead we’re subjected to endless films about moving closets and human centipede’s. These films rely on a formula that is replicated over and over again.
Cain Hill will focus on what made horror great: Tension, suspense, dread and fear.
We have a central group of characters that have placed themselves in an unenviable position. Aware of the stories surrounding Cain Hill they still take it upon themselves to enter the belly of the beast.
Once inside they are confronted by something none of them was prepared for and what begins is a race to escape with their lives.
With Cain Hill we have created a script that is everything a true horror should be. Full of atmosphere, tension, dread and of course . . . Scary as hell.
We want you to be a part of bringing this film to life. With your help we can create a horror that pays homage to the classics and gives you, the audience a horror you can watch again and again.
E4 will be featuring some of the making of Cain Hill as part of their new reality documentary series 'Stage School', following acting graduates who land their first film role. They will be auditioning for the director and producer of Cain Hill in the hopes of landing a major supporting role in the film.
The series will be transmitted in 30x 30" transmissions during primetime on E4, E4 HD & E4+1 in the United Kingdom, Ireland & Switzerland in autumn 2016.
When I was first pitched the idea of doing a horror film, I was immediately excited. Aside from doing two big-budget pictures, one of which is an action/fantasy film, and the other a biopic, the idea of squeezing a low-budget horror film into the mix really appealed to me, and I immediately knew the way I wanted to approach it.
Having grown up watching horror films, mainly thanks to my brother, I've always held in highest regard the staple horrors from the 70s and 80s, such as Halloween and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. The fact that those films didn't have to rely on being too gratuitous with gore, but instead letting raw tension translate into fear, was what really got me scared by those movies.
Michael losing it, and going crazy through the closet. Leatherface slamming the door. Christine chasing down Moochie Welch. Those scenes for me were genuinely scary, and with not a drop of blood in sight.
For me, less can be much, much more. I think that no matter what any filmmaker could (never mind can) actually show on screen, it will never be as horrific as the images that audiences can create in their heads, so why try and compete with that?

Modern horrors rely too much on guts, gore, and cheap scare tactics in my opinion. Where did the tension go?
And that is what excited me about Cain Hill. The opportunity to make a horror, old-school style, that allows tension and fear of the situation to make the audiences watch it from behind a pillow, or want to shout "get out of there, run!" at the screen.
My favourite quote, and my mantra when it comes to filmmaking, comes from Carl Laemmle, the legendary founder of Universal Studios. He said "Movies should make you laugh, cry, or sit on the edge of your seat". I've always tried to keep this in mind in my 15 years in TV and film, and it's no more relevant than on Cain Hill.

The story, about a group of filmmakers that go to an abandoned asylum famous for its unexplained murders, allows us to not only introduce some great and memorable characters, but also enables us to make the events inside the Asylum really unnerving.
The location alone can make anyone feel uncomfortable at the best of times, so to have a psychotic murderer loose in there, playing cat-and-mouse with the film crew, will surely keep audiences on the edge of their seats, and old Carl happy too.
Tony (the producer of the film) and myself are good friends with Hollywood legend Scott Spiegel, who was the writer of 'Evil Dead 2', is co-owner of Raw Nerve ('Hostel') with Eli Roth & Boaz Yakin, and is childhood friends and regular collaborators with Quentin Tarantino, Bruce Campbell & Sam Raimi. Scotty is a great contact to have on hand, and he will be offering tips and suggestions for some of our scenes, and I will certainly be asking him for some advice during this production.

By shooting with a low budget, it will allow us the creative freedom to shoot without the constraints of studios and investors, and will also let us use some of the old-school filmmaking techniques that were used on those horrors we all know and love. We are able shoot this film on a low budget, in a short schedule, and to a very high quality, thanks to our combined experience working in film, throughout our cast and crew, plus a few favours here and there. We already have a guaranteed DVD and streaming distribution in place for it, and want to make sure we put as much money on the screen as possible.
Now we get to the business end of the campaign.
We all know creating a great film costs money, between Cast & Crew expenses and Equipment hire the budget soon rises. We are fundraising for a budget of £10,000 to be used across all departments during production.
We want to get the best out of your donations and make your support go as far as possible so we have created a fluid budget. What does that mean? Well it means that we don’t have a set budget for each department, due to the flexible funding of our campaign it means whatever our total funds are we can spread them across department ensuring that your money is used efficiently and every department gets the best out of our fundraising.
We have already identified the departments we know will need funding:
With your help our talented team will ensure every penny is spent efficiently to create a high quality horror feature that you can be proud to be a part of. If you would like to be a part of our exciting new film all you have to do is pick your perk and push us closer to our goal.
We have assembled an unbelievable Cast & Crew to create a high quality, low budget horror that you can enjoy over and over.
Meet the creators behind Cain Hill.

We understand that every film has its risk and challenges and that each projects will bring specific problems. However, our team have worked on countless films in various genres and are highly capable of identifying and solving any issue that may arise.
Some of the key issues we feel may become apparent:
Staying on Budget
We have experienced producer’s that have dealt with budget breakdowns on low and high budget films. We’re confident that with careful planning and a well-managed budget we can ensure that the project stays within our chosen budget.
Scheduling
We understand that in low-budget movie making cast & crew may have other commitments that could clash. Although some of these issues are out of our hands by ensuring that we have a well planned shooting schedule given well in advance of the shoot dates our cast and crew are able to know when and where they will be needed.
Weather
Unfortunately we can’t control the weather. What we can do however is plan for every eventuality. Luckily the majority of our shots are interior making it far easier to manage the issue.
