Logline

12-year-old Josh is a mixed race boy and a promising baseball player. He is abused by his mother's boyfriend Byrd, and neglected by his mother Debbie. He manages to forge his own path in life when his long-lost grandfather Solomon insists he study for his Bar Mitzvah.

Synopsis

It is a brutally hot summer in Miami. Josh’s Jewish mother Debbie has just started a romance with Byrd, a charming black man who introduces 12-year-old Josh to his first love: baseball. He practices with the boy day and night to mold him into the next Alex Rodriguez. The training isn’t just reserved for the field. As Byrd says, ‘you have to look the part before you can be the part’. He takes Josh to Star Island to admire the mansions and for test drives in Ferraris to show him all that awaits him if he follows the ‘gameplan’.

But Byrd also happens to be a violent drunk and crack addict. He torments the family, and puts them through physical and emotional heart break. With her back against the wall Debbie is forced to act in order to save her family. She reaches out to her long lost father, Solomon, who she hasn’t spoken to in three years. Regarded as one New York’s most successful businessmen, he is never one to turn away from a good deal. He agrees to help the family under one condition: Josh has a Bar Mitzvah. Helping him along the way is Rabbi Brookstein, a hip New York Jew and baseball fanatic, who becomes a moral compass.

As Josh begins preparing for his Bar Mitzvah, he finds himself growing further away from Byrd and his ‘dream’. When Byrd sees he is losing his grip on Josh, he begins to react violently. He takes more drugs, grows more irritable, and eventually spirals out of control.

Callused Hands tells the story of one boy’s journey into manhood over the most important summer of his life as he tries to navigate his way between winning a Little League championship and having a Bar Mitzvah, while avoiding the wrath of his abusive mother’s boyfriend.

What we Want and What you Get!

We have already managed to raise $150,000. This is quite an achievement for a first feature film. But to really do the story justice we are in need of $50,000 more. This money will go toward the essentials in the production phase. Every penny you spend will go up on the screen. We will use the money raised on Indiegogo toward crew, equipment rentals, production design, costume, and locations. And we have a ton of great perks for those that give money toward the project. They include a shout-out on our Facebook and Twitter page, a copy of the film on DVD, and even invitation to screenings. A full list of the perks can be found on the right hand side.

But...even if you can't offer money you can still help by SPREADING THE WORD. Share us on Facebook, give us a Tweet, write about us in your blogs, tell your friends.
