Project Overview
The Camellia Art Park is a sculpture park planned along Camellia Boulevard from Johnston Street to the Vermilion River. The Camellia Gridshell Pavilion is the first feature in the park to be built. A gridshell is an innovative lightweight structural system composed of curved surfaces of gridded wood. The Camellia Gridshell will be one of the only wooden gridshells in the United States. Continuous lengths of white oak will form the grid of the pavilion which will then be covered with white aluminum panels. The Camellia Gridshell Pavilion will provide a shaded place for rest, reflection, and interpretation for the art park. The Gridshell was designed by UL Lafayette architecture students along with professional engineers. It will be built by the students and local contractors during the 2015 summer. The Pavilion is partially funded by a Canadian Social Sciences and Humanities Research Grant, the Acadiana Center for the Arts, and the Lafayette Consolidated Government.
Additional funds from this Indiegogo campaign are needed to complete the project. Some contributions to this project may be tax deductible through the UL Foundation.
