Camp The Eclipse 2017
The Circle School's Natural Resources Group (NRG) is a collaborative student interest group within The Circle School, Harrisburg's democratic school. The NRG is dedicated to planning and leading backpacking, camping, and other field trips in the great outdoors. Currently led by a 13-year-old girl, we have taken on our biggest challenge ever: seeing the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2017 in the high desert of Oregon.
Essentials:
The students of the NRG are responsible for every aspect of planning, fundraising, and executing the trip. We started in the fall of 2015, knowing it would take two years of hard work to pull off such an epic trip. Besides fundraising, researching, and planning for the trip, we also did all the work for two test-run field trips: an overnight at school to test tents and other gear, then a three-day trip to upstate NY to see Niagara Falls, Letchworth Falls, and Eternal Flame Falls.
Things we will do and learn: camping, cooking our own food, doing laundry, pitching tents, collecting campfire wood, telling stories, learning SO much, singing songs, taking pictures, and getting along. We expect to learn a lot about astronomy, biology, ecology, geology, geography, literature, history, sociology, critical thinking, accounting, organizational leadership, archaeology, budgeting, as well as some really important stuff that doesn't fit into any neat category.
If we exceed our goal, we hope to expand the trip, such as adding a boat trip on Crater Lake, rock climbing in Smith Rock State Park, admission to Sea Lion Caves, and other things we'd love to do but aren't top priorities for our limited funding.
Please help us reach and exceed our goal!
