Empowering Native American Youth:

In 2008 Camp Thunderbird South Dakota (CTSD) was founded by a few caring teachers at He Dog School on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

The Challenge:

Native American youth in South Dakota face poverty, substance abuse, gangs and parental neglect. The suicide rate for Native youth in the Great Plains is ten times the national average. Not surprisingly, education is undermined. Native students trail their white peers by two to three grade levels in reading and math. As one community member and aide at He Dog School on the Rosebud Reservation described, “There are so few opportunities here that can give our kids hope from a young age.”
