Overview
This is the 3rd outing of Chip Bit Day, a chiptune music event, once again celebrating all things 8bit, electronic & nostalgic. Hitting Manchester for Saturday 28th April at Zombie Shack, Chip Bit Day will be hosting great artists, such as, Please Lose Battle, Tekmann, Circuit, Myths & Monsters plus more! Get your tickets, plus other cool goodies below!

The History

I, personally have been involved in the chiptune music scene for over 3 years now and have built a strong network of contacts across the globe. This firstly began through ‘We Are The Future Records’, a music label which helped promote music around the themes of retro & nostalgia. I found myself scouring through the internet looking for new bands that suited the label. Through this I found Chiptune and I was immediately hooked. Something that represented my interests of video games, art, music and nostalgia, whilst also filled such as love and passion, spoke to me on so many levels.

During the start of 2015 I created ‘Chip Bit Sid’, a passionate music blog which was dedicated to all things chiptune & synth. Due to living in Manchester, I was lucky enough to be in a city which was about to explode onto the chiptune scene, with the likes of GameFace- an ongoing internet radio show hosted by Fab Cafe- and Superbyte Festival.

Throughout 2015 I managed to build up the blog and Chip Bit Sid name, by writing weekly posts and reviews about chiptune music and artists that interested me. I made many of friends throughout the scene, even getting my own spot on GameFace’s radio show and becoming part of the PRESS for Superbyte 2015. It was then towards the end of 2015 I realised that my blog was getting towards its first anniversary and so I thought I’d host my own event to celebrate: and it is here that “Chip Bit Day” was born.

It started off small, but gradually began to generate interest due to a crowdfunding page used to sell tickets and gain the additional funds needed to bring in performers from Europe. The artist list is as follows: Joe Bleeps, Euan Lynn, Jellyatrix, GwEm, Auracle, xX Critical Strike Xx, Mpegasus, Kenobit, 2xAA, J3WEL, HarleyLikesMusic & finally ChipBattles. Plus Idiotbox, the VJ for the evening.

I enlisted the help friends to help out on the day and with preparations such as 3D printing ‘gameboy style cartridge lanyards for lucky backers. Chip Bit Day was a great success and had a large turn out. The King Arms in Salford hosted the event, and was a suitable place to have it, due to it’s old and quaint aesthetic. I’ve always been a huge supporter of using old venues, mainly because of my fascination with history. Chip Bit Day 2016 was hugely successful and brought a lot of recognition to myself, my blog and the event.

Towards the end of 2016 I had decided to organise a follow up event for 2017 as the previous years was so successful. However, I wanted to ensure that it would be bigger and better than the last, as well as ironing out any issues I had faced previously; thus developing my skills as an event organiser.

As a result of my successful marketing strategies and wide coverage of the event I was take Chip Bit Day further and actually manage to top the the previous event.

The Event

Since the past events have been well received, I want to top 2018 to top both them, by bringing more chiptune artists from out of the country. This is no small feat and It's going to take A LOT of effort to raise the funds needed to make Chip Bit Day 18 a smashing success.

Chip Bit Day 18 is currently scheduled for 28th April (4pm - 11pm) and will take place at The Zombie Shack, a fantastic venue is both out of the way as well as being easy to get to. Situated right next to Oxford Road Train Station, The Zombie Shack has amazing train links meaning people can just roll in & out the venue. Buses are plentiful, with transport going on through the night (Oxford Road is supposed to be the busiest route in europe)! The inside is of brilliance, decorated to look like a tiki bar whilst being big enough to fit 150 people inside!

Due to The Zombie Shack being in the heart of manchester, there are plenty of hotels scattered, about the cheapest (YMCA) being only over a 10 minute walk away.

Following the bus routes to Fallowfield there are also plenty of budget accommodation, from Ram Shack Lodge to The Hallmark Inn with good deals.

T-shirts

This year we're actually going to be doing t-shirts! The design has been done by yours truly and on super good quality fruit of the loom t-shirts. They will be on sale at the event for £18.00. BUT I'll be selling them exclusively for £13.00 on the crowdfunder- so head over there to grab a bargain! There’s black, red, navy blue & dark grey to choose from!

CD Compilation

To help further raise funds we'll also be doing a music compilation. Chiptuners from everywhere have helped out by supplying a track. Every person who backs the crowdfunder will automatically receive the digital compilation album which will be available on bandcamp. Physical releases will also be available on bandcamp as CDs & Cassettes, with the artwork on amazing holographic rainbow card!

Risks

Of course with crowd funding there are risks. The hire of the venue however is not one of them, as this has already been paid. However, if we exceed the capacity of 150, the event will be moved to a bigger location.

All money received will go to paying for the artists playing as well as the crowd funding rewards & advertisements across manchester. Chip Bit Day is a non-profit organisation which I do out of fun & passion for the chiptune community.
