ChloeIsaBow + Co, founded in 2016 by Chloe Isabelle Bowman is a project-based dance company currently based in Brooklyn, NY. It is their mission to make dance more accessible to a wide range of audiences through collaboration and presentation outside of the traditional theater setting. The company has performed in galleries, outdoor spaces and theaters. Associations have been formed with musicians, visual artists and videographers. They have presented work at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center, The Tank (NYC), Celebrate Downtown (RVA), Green Space (NY) and at Peridance’s APAP Showcase. Through collaboration with her dancers Chloe crafts choreography that fosters intimacy through gesture and attention to detail. The company explores gesture and it’s ability to read as loudly as full-bodied movement. It is their belief that gestures are intrinsically revealing and hands have the ability to communicate experiences and emotions through the slightest movement.
After a year of working in the studio we are extremely excited to be presenting our first evening length work Witness at Dogtown Dance Theatre in Richmond, VA. Dogtown offers artists an incredible space for a more affordable price than theater rentals in larger cities. This will allow us as, a young company to present our work in a state-of-the- art theater. However, we still need your help to make this happen. Your donation will help us continue to grow as a young company. Your gift will go directly to pay for the theater rental, costumes and transportation to Richmond from New York, paying the dancers and staffing the show. We greatly appreciate the support! No amount is too small.
The company is comprised of three VCU dance and choreography graduates and two George Mason dance graduates. After showing excerpts of the evening length work in various informal showings and festivals in New York we are thrilled to be traveling to Richmond where so many of us have dance roots to premiere the completed piece.
Witness explores different scenarios as the dancers watch, listen, and react through movement: posing the following questions... How do you react to someone else’s fear? How do you react to your own? Once you witness, do you stay, leave, support, speak the truth? How do you present your evidence and hold yourself accountable? The dancers create a world onstage punctuated with moments of intimacy. Chloe crafts gestural movement which reveals multiple layers and complex relationships.
Chloe will be holding a free community dance-making class at Dogtown Dance Theatre on Saturday June 10th at 2pm. All are welcome to attend and will hopefully gain insight into the process of making dance and create some of your own!
