Who we are
Churn Urban Creamery started as a pop-up in April 2016, owned by a husband and wife team. Our focus was to provide farm fresh ice cream, a healthier/less sweet option, in our little renegade ice cream cart.
Along the way, we wanted to create and nurture relationships with different farmers so we could get our hands on the freshest and most delicious ingredients. We even took the liberty of growing some of the ingredients in our humble backyard urban farm.
After popping up all over San Francisco and the Bay Area, working private events, farmers markets and festivals, we are needing a more permanent home. We are now working on a brick and mortar location. Contributions to our campaign will help us make the finish line. And what a perfect neighborhood to bring farm fresh ice cream to, the Portola neighborhood, the Garden District of San Francisco. And what a perfect space, one that was originally a 1920s sweets shop.
Funding
Churn is raising $21,000 to fund aspects of the project.
- We will be needing 11,000 for a new batch freezer. This equipment is what freezes the liquid base and adds air to the product to make it ice cream.
- We will be needing $8,000 to build a custom bar and stools for that old times soda jerk feel.
- We will be needing $2,000 for a 16 flavor dipping cabinet, the type of display freezer you see at the ice cream parlors.
Reach Goal: $30,000.
Once we reach our initial goal of $21,000 we would like to achieve our reach goal of $30,000 to add in a convection oven to make our special ice cream mix ins, in house.
The Mission
Mission Statement: Churn Urban Creamery’s mission is to provide an egg-less ice cream product through a more sustainable ice cream brand that serves the conscious consumer and supports local businesses and urban farms.
To focus on sustainability and seasonality is important to our business. To provide the consumer with the freshest possible fruit, at peak season is the goal. And to grow many of those ingredients ourselves is the highest goal.

History
The tallest building in the neighborhood, this old grand movie palace has a place in the hearts of locals from the Portola neighborhood. It opened in 1927, featuring black and white movies with an entry fee of 25 cents. The main storefront was originally a sweets shop. Throughout the years, the space has evolved from the sweets shop, to a diner, and finally into Johnson's BBQ. The theater and the main storefront has been abandoned and decaying these past few years until the summer of 2017 when SF's Office of Economic and Workplace Development and the Portola Neighborhood Association funded a full revamp of the theater facade.
Churn Urban Creamery is looking to renovate the main storefront space and breathe new life into this space that already has so much history.
