Our Story
I am Petra, an Austrian woman, who lives in El Salvador and with the help of many heads and hands, i am starting this project, because i see a big need of culture activities in El Salvador.
I realized that there isn' t diversity and quality in culture activities in the rural areas of El Salvador, and there are no cinemas for the people, because the only cinemas which are exsisting are in big shopping malls in the capital and therefore only for the rich part of the population.
From these facts, the idea of a mobile cinema was born which means - "If the people can not go to the cinema, the cinema has come to them"
The Impact
Our project is a mobile cinema in the rural areas in El Salvador, Central America.
With a Cinemobil, we visit communities and organize movie nights, where we show movies with a digital projector.
The idea of the "cinemateca ambulante" is to bring movies, which are lying beyond the so-called mainstream, to an audience that neither has the opportunity nor has the impulse to see quality films. Most of all we want to create a possibility to get to know the variety of cinemaculture, especially of Latin-America.
You have to know that there are only a few cinemas exsiting in El Salvador, mostly in the capital and that the mayority of the Salvadorean people don' t have the chance to see a movie on a screen in their lives.
We would like to create a nocturnal window to the outside world in remote communities, put the everyday life with its problems a side for the lenght of a film, gather people with different opinions to get to know cinema as a collective experience and a form of information. And we want to provide the opportunity to take a look at different forms of film, film culture and film history.
We're about to create an opportunity to experience the magic of cinema, take information to the villages and contribute culture-activies, which are very rare in the rural areas of El Salvador. Above all, we want to overcome social or financial barriers of cultural participation and bring a diversity of film culture directly to the people.
Back to the roots of film history we would like to bring the idea of what a travelling cinemateque once was back to life. As the international film industrie requires more and more technical and financial efforts to screen movies , there are still countries which cannot catch up with this development as they do not even have movie theatres anywhere beside their capitals. Though it happens that any sense for film culture is threatened with extinction. The „cinemateca ambulante" starts again with what happend in early film history.
The project is planned to hold movie nights continuously over a few months period in the time between May and August 2012. In that time we will organize up to 100 movie nights in 12 different villages of the states of Sonsonate, Santa Ana and Ahuachapan.
We want to show movies, right across film history as "classics" of silent films, Latin American productions, documentaries, most of all indepentend productions, children's films and short films.
What We Need & What You Get
To realize our project, we need a vehicle, a projector (beamer), a screen, an audio system and a device for playing movies.Further, we will need funds for advertising, electricity, fuel and personal.
We estimate the financial cost for the project to approximately 15,000 and we hope to fund it on Indie GoGo!
If we don' t fund the whole amount we will do it smaller and for less time... but your money will be used for sharing cinema and filmculture in El Salvador, thats for sure! And you will know what happens with your money through our blog!
