Lake County High School and West Park Elementary schools were built in the early 1960's.  West Park has heating system pipes that were encapsulated within concrete during the construction process. Both buildings have pipes that do not have any zones or shut-off valves. Any leak that springs has a catastrophic effect for the entire system until repairs can be made.  The heating system piping is currently in a corroded condition that is typical for piping of this age. This portion of the infrastructure is a serious issue with the buildings.

The Lake County School District Facilities Plan identified many other deficiencies with our school buildings and the needs of the District. The plan was developed over two years by a joint facilities committee of community members and school district employees. The meetings were open and publicized for the maximum community involvement.

We were fortunate to get through this year; however, we felt it necessary to use some of the district budget to move forward.

What does this mean? We are using district funds to match a grant application and at the same time begin the most critical work at West Park.  If we get the grant, we will replace some of the money into our 2012-2013 budget for necessary expenses.

What will the project involve? We will fix the heating and water pipes at West Park this summer and replace most of the unit ventilators in classrooms.

When will this portion of the repairs be complete? Prior to the start of the 2012-2013 school year.

What do we lose when we spend these dollars? We lose text materials, classroom equipment and supplies and the ability to do any other high cost repairs that may be needed during the school year.

Does this mean that we do not need any other funding for West Park or the district? No.  This is an emergency and must be done; but we are not fixing all the systems that need to be repaired at West Park including installing a sprinkler system, fixing the electrical wiring and upgrading technological capabilities in that building.

What about the high school? We have applied for a grant and must either go to the voters to match the grant or go to the voters to pay for the urgent repairs at the high school.  The systems are fragile; hopefully they will continue to function!

Please keep in mind that Lake County High School and West Park Elementary School were both built in the 1960’s.  As a result, many parts of the buildings have exceeded their useful life and are in need of critical repairs / replacements.

Over the past 10 years, the Lake County School District has received over $4 million dollars in grants that have been matched with local funds to repair immediate needs as prioritized by the Facilities Committee. Pitts Elementary and the Middle School have had extensive renovations.  West Park Elementary and the High School have major infrastructure issues, but the buildings are structurally sound.

This fundraising effort will secure money for the Citizens for Lake County Schools to campaign to pass a bond in November. Our schools must be fixed, and the district does not have the funding necessary to repair them.
