In
the very near future, the ability to read and write code will be as
ubiquitous as ordinary literacy is today. Even now, as software and
information technology continue to reshape the world we live in,
greater and greater numbers of people are finding not only
substantial professional advantages by learning and plying their
skills with programming languages, but also finding increasing
personal and creative advantages as well. And while the web and
countless numbers of for-profit higher education companies seek to
take advantage of those seeking to learn these skills, many are being
left behind due to either lacking the financial resources to enroll
in such programs, or merely finding the pursuit of them daunting.
For
these –and a number of other- reasons, Code Here is seeking to
create a new, more user friendly, and best of all free resource to
help those who wish to train themselves in the art and science of
this new literacy gain the skills they need to advance themselves
professionally, artistically and technologically.
Whether
one is looking to enter the IT field as a professional, or wishing to
design the program, app or video game they’ve been dreaming of,
Code Here seeks to provide both the amateur web surfer and seasoned
programmer with the opportunity to begin their education in basic
coding, or advance their skills and understanding to greater degrees,
all while providing no cost tutorials designed with the casual user
in mind.
Those
who participate will have the opportunity to be trained and certified
in;
With a focus on user friendly education, Code Here seeks to change
the way coding is learned. Rather than focusing on repetition, with
lessons that obligate users to type the same code over and over again
until their eyes dry out and fingertips bleed, Code Here’s unique
training system endeavors to provide more engaging and immersing
lessons, with a focus on bringing the participant a proper
understanding of what they’re doing, as opposed to simple
mechanical processes aimed at producing more basic results.
Implementing the “fork and fix” process for code review, users
who write bad code in the course of training will be shown both what
went wrong in their projects, as well as how to fix given problems as
they go, making for a more engaging, confident (and hopefully even
fun) experience as they learn and refine their skills. Coupled with
lessons designed to teach more advanced short cut methods used by
more seasoned coders, Code Here will strive to help participants both
learn the languages they train to understand, while also fostering
the most pleasant and personalized environment possible.
After completing given lesson plans in the languages and methods
offered, users will be, in many cases, provided both with
certificates of completion and competency, as well as with licenses
for given software packages. Additionally, support will be made
available to help new coders build their portfolios, create and
format resumes and get advice on how to market their new found skills
in the professional world, all for the low cost of only the desire to
learn.
This project, as ambitious as it is, is not only feasible, but
already well underway. With the lesson formats, program options and
necessary resources largely produced and ready to go, a final and
crucial aspect is still badly needed. This is of course, the start up
financial support needed for a successful launch.
In the spirit of open public interest and to ensure the project is
not itself beholden to financial interests or shareholders as is
common in more typical business models, Code Here is seeking crowd
funded donations to make its ambitions a reality. As it is a project
rooted in the spirit of not for profit open source public benefit,
Code Here turns to you, the generous public of the internet at large,
to help make this project a reality.
With our fund-raising largely on its way to meeting its goal, we are
seeking additional donations to help us meet (and hopefully exceed)
our necessary start-up funding requirements. For those interested in
helping this great educational project, we have put together this
Indigogo campaign, to collect donations and advance the cause of
promoting this broader and more open coding educational opportunity.
If the goal is met or exceeded within it’s given time frame,
Andrew, the founder of Code Here has agreed, for the purposes of your
amusement, to take on a daring if not insane challenge in the course
of completing the project.

Should you wish to see this project become a reality, or merely
desire to see steam blow out of the ears of the project’s founding
programmer, donate today and help advance the cause of a more robust
and open public literacy in this, the new literacy of the modern
information age.
