HIS STORY:
My name is Cody Greenstein. I am a sophomore at the University of Delaware. On Monday October 29th, Hurricane Sandy hit my community of Breezy Point, Queens, New York with the full force of its destruction and devastation. Breezy Point is a peninsula, just outside New York City; an extremely small but tight-knit and family-oriented community.
The storm caused catastrophic flooding, which in turn brought down power lines. The power lines sparked, creating a six-alarm fire that burned 111 homes to the ground on the ocean side of the peninsula. Homes in Breezy Point that remained standing, were damaged by flood waters, that either swept them fully off their foundations, or damaged them beyond repair. My home was one of those destroyed in the flooding.
My family is now trying to salvage my home, with no heat, electricity, and fresh water since Sandy hit. They expect to be without basic utilities for months. My family, relatives, friends, and neighbors have lost everything they love, faster than anyone can comprehend. However, I can’t help but feel this powerful sensation of hope for the future because of the outpouring of support.
Any little step that is taken to help my hometown, or any other coastal community affected by Sandy, is appreciated in every way possible by those of us who have been victims of this horrendous storm. The donations of money, canned food, clothing and other forms of aid have meant more than we can say. Please continue to think of those who have been effected by the ravages of Hurricane Sandy after the memory of the horror fades and you go back to your daily lives.
We will need your thoughts and prayers for weeks and months to come.
IMPACT
Your monetary contribution will go directly towards Cody, his family, and neighbors in Breezy Point, one of the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. Your donations will help them rebuild their homes and their lives.
Cody's parents are now living with his uncle, and are unable to determine the full extent of damage to their home, which is currently uninhabitable. Breezy Point residents are still without heat, electricity, gasoline; and cell phone towers are down. PLEASE HELP!
