Columbus Crossing Borders Project
There are millions of people in our world who are fleeing war, terror, hardship. These are families being forced from their homes, loved ones and communities torn apart. These are people hoping for safety and peace -- people like you and I.
But what are the chances they will be welcomed into a new country with open arms? Many people do not understand the struggle of refugees and some people even fear them. Our own country has seen a high level of anti-immigration sentiment and misinformation.
In an effort to make a kinder difference, The Columbus Crossing Borders Project was born. This is a nonprofit organization consisting of 34 artists and a film crew who have contributed their time and creative talents to instigate compassion and unite communities in humanitarian aid for refugees.
The Columbus Crossing Borders Project will begin its tour of Central Ohio on May 21, 2017.
Through a partnership with Community Refugee and Immigration Services, The Columbus Crossing Borders Project presents an intimate look into the arduous journeys of refugees who have been willing to share their stories on film. Inspired by these stories, each of the 34 artists participating in this project have been presented with a unique challenge: to ' cross the borders' and enter into their neighbor's painting. Consequently, these artists must cooperate to resolve any challenges that arise as they cross borders. Perhaps a hand is reaching from one painting into the next. Maybe a figure is running from one painting into the other. And throughout the exhibit, as paintings and diversities flow in their combined efforts, what emerges is a bigger, more beautiful outcome resulting from a cooperative community.
About The Columbus Crossing Borders Documentary Film
The Columbus Crossing Borders documentary, titled "Breathe Free", spotlights the stories of refugees and the art exhibit inspired by those stories. Through the lens of filmmaker Doug Swift, we are introduced to those who have fled war, terror and horrific conditions as we observe what is universal about their personal journeys and what is unique. We see the unease and the restless fear that profoundly affects US border issues and we meet the humanity in those who provide comfort, support and advocacy. And when 34 artists join together to create a project based on this timeless plight of refugees, they metaphorically encounter many of the difficulties, challenges, and abundant gifts that result in crossing borders. Director: Doug Swift / Producer: Laurie VanBalen
The Columbus Crossing Borders Project is a nonprofit organization relying on the dedicated participation of volunteers and the generous support of charitable funding. A grant has been awarded by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, but more funds are needed to transport the exhibit to widespread Ohio communities and to complete the documentary film. This fundraiser was created to support our humanitarian outreach. It is our sincere hope to spread the message of understanding and compassion in order to make a loving difference.
