Introducing our new Smell-Free Compost Bin

There are many compost bins for your kitchen counter on the market. But they’re all pretty much the same: either they’re airtight or they only have a small hole in the lid. This leads us to the problem of food rotting in the bin and thus a really bad smell in your kitchen. Nobody want’s that! This is why we designed an innovative new compost bin with an integrated airflow. With the air circulating through the bin there is much more oxygen which again reduces the smell significantly. After some time, however, your organic waste could still develop a slight smell, which is why we integrated a charcoal filter in the lid. With this filter, you won't notice any smell at all.

Smart Airflow for reduced smell

The airflow system works in the following way: air from your room flows through the holes on the outside of the stainless steel bucket and then goes upwards in between the outside and the inside bucket. Flowing from the top in the inside bucket, it mixes with the inner air and generates a circulation. Warmer air flows up and goes through the active charcoal filter placed in the lid. This prevents any smell from escaping the compost bin. Aside from that your organic waste rots much slower than in any other compost bin. This contributes to not even developing a bad smell.

Designed to fit your kitchen

The high quality stainless steel design will fit every kitchen! We want our backers to get the best quality possible, which is why we plan to use durable 18/10 stainless steel for the outside bucket and the lid. The inner bucket is made from sturdy plastic which can be comfortably put in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. In this way, there’s will be no need to waste any additional plastic bags to put your compost in. But if you prefer to do so, as it might be easier to dispose, we are also planning to offer bio-degradable bags that fit perfectly in our bin!

Simple, elegant and functional  

The compost bin is easy to assemble. Just put the smaller, inner plastic bin in the outside stainless-steel bin. You can also change the charcoal filter in the lid which will be necessary about twice a year.  We designed the inner bin very sturdy and dishwasher safe, so it can hold your compost without any additional bags.

Perfect size and practical 

With a capacity of 5 liters/170 ounces this product has an ideal size. When fully filled, the airflow will just be enough to reduce the smell and slow the inside waste from rotting. We recommend emptying the bin once a week as rotting cannot be completely prevented. For easy and convenient transportation, both the outside and the inside bin have handles. This makes emptying the bin comfortable and easy. The high quality 18/10 stainless steel will make your compost bin last for ages! And, to be honest, stainless-steel just looks so much better than a plastic compost bin.

Product Development and Design Process

When we had the idea for this brand new compost bin we immediately started to make our first designs in CAD. You can see some of our designs during many iterations of our design process: 

After designing the bin we 3D-printed our first fully-functioning prototype and tested it. The final product that we plan to send you will of course be in stainless steel, but for the prototype it was easier to 3D print it in plastic and then test its function. 

With testing completed and the prototype fully functioning as we wanted, we decided to share this project with you and with your help we can get it to production! The money we raise with this Kickstarter will be mainly used for the mould making and also for the production. Stainless steel moulds and products are very expensive, but with you backing this project it can be possible and you will be rewarded with the first units of this brand new compost bin!
