What is Crossing The Plain?

Crossing The Plain is an ambitious collaborative film project aiming to visualise a Johnny Cash classic, with a cosmic twist.

A short drama adapted from the beautiful song “I hung my head” sung by Johnny Cash and originally written by Sting, Crossing The Plain takes place across 21st Century Britain and the late 19th Century American West.

A young man at odds with his surroundings is dramatically thrown into a different time to relive a life changing mistake. Same Guy, Same Girl, Same Gun.

Who are we?

We are a creative team of third year filmmaking students and alumni from the University of the West of England in Bristol. Collectively the team have worked across a wide range of projects and platforms from short documentaries and dramas to interactive comics and animation. Director, Tim Petherick, was behind the successful documentary ‘Momentum’ and Jennifer Robbins was the producer of the film Jeff’s Issue.

The film’s roots lie in music. A number of crewmembers are musicians highly involved with the development of the film. Jack Francis from the band Poor Old Dogs supervised the writing of the script and Zander Mavor, DJ, composer and all round musical guru is busy composing music for the film with the UWE Orchestra.

Why should you help fund Crossing The Plain?

Funding Crossing The Plain will benefit everyone involved with and interested in the film. It is a great opportunity to fund a unique project and support a team of talented and ambitious students trying to break into the film industry. You will be supporting all the local artists, musicians and businesses who are assisting in the film’s creation. You will also be maintaining and increasing the industry interest in some of the exciting locations being used including the dramatic Valley Of the Rocks in Devon and the 19th century Laredo western town in Kent.

It is important to note that no cast or crew will profit in any way from donations. All money will go directly into the film.

Where will your money go?

Travel and accommodation (£500 minimum) Our locations are all around the UK and transporting actors, crew and kit hundreds of miles isn’t cheap!

Art Department (£1500 minimum) Location rental, props, set design and costumes are a hugely important part of the film and we have to make sure everything looks authentic and professional.

Catering (£500)

Film Festivals and promotion (£500) We have big ambitions for the film once it’s edited. The film will be entered into some of the best short film festivals in the UK, with the potential to go further afield. Unfortunately entering film festivals isn’t free. After the festivals the film will be made available for everyone to watch online.

Visuals

Visually the film has been inspired by the wide, sweeping landscapes seen throughout iconic western themed films. These shots, which emphasise the isolation of the people within them, present the landscape as characters onto themselves. The rawness and unforgiving nature of the landscapes help develop the themes of guilt and belonging in Crossing The Plain.

I’m super poor

If you’re super poor then remember that sharing our social media pages is completely free! Sharing our pages is an absolutely massive part of the campaign. We also have the £1 perk option. Everything helps.

Risks

Unfortunately not everything can always be in our control and due to the nature of film making there are lots of things that we have no power over.

Although we have set target dates for shooting and a delivery date for completion of the film we hope everyone understands that unforeseen circumstances could cause the dates of filming and delivery to change. However we are an experienced, dedicated crew that have encountered and overcome difficult circumstances before.

Similarly, depending on the interest & demand, delivery times for the perks may be affected. We will obviously endeavour to deliver every perk as quickly as we can and will keep you up to date with any changes in delivery. Your patience will be very much appreciated.
