Hello!

My name is Arielle Szpiro, I am writer/director originally from Montreal, currently studying at Vancouver Film School. It is my pleasure to introduce my short film to you, Days Like Today.

Days Like Today

Set in 1970, Days Like Today follows Nicki, a panic-attack prone teenager who, after the death of his best friend and older brother, Dennis, must learn how to navigate his emotions alone with the help of the music his brother left behind for him.

Before leaving for his first year at a school of music, Dennis advises his anxious little brother, Nicki, to seek comfort in his music while he is away. Claiming it to be his soul, Dennis shows Nicki his sacred record, and reassures him that the spirit within it will manifest his own whenever Nicki needs him most. Months later, Dennis tragically dies while away at college, leaving Nicki alone to navigate his feelings, and tense home life. In need of his big brother, he must believe in the spiritual, connective power of music to reunite with him in soul.

Creative Intent

This story is dedicated to those closest to us, and the healing powers they possess, both in body and in spirit. Loss—in all its forms—is a bewildering pain. Its darkness seems impossible to fully understand or accept. However, it is a darkness so intense, that it can lead us towards the light. Whether we are conscious of it or not, losing the ability to be with our loved ones on this plain forces us to reach for another, opening up a spiritual world we may not have known existed before. Through this, I wish to demonstrate the powers of love, and our ability to connect to a universal source only accessed by the soul.

This story focuses on the unspoken, spiritual language shared between brother and sister alike, who possess the ability to heal wounds only seen through the eyes of children who have shared the same life. Days Like Today celebrates the sacredness of siblinghood.

As a first time filmmaker, I want to tell the truth, and connect with my audience on a spiritual level. In this age of media and artificial intelligence, truth has never been more vital, and it is the duty of all storytellers to provide it for our current generations, and the ones to come, and not lose sight of what is most truly important in life: love

Funding & Production Value

Your kind generosity in aiding to fund this film will help me fulfill my duty as a storyteller, tell Nicki and Dennis's story with the utmost care, and serve as your personal donation towards reminding others to love while they can.

My team needs $4500 of funding to bring this story to life. The majority of funding will be allocated towards:

- Post-production video, sound & colour editing (~$1500)
- Cinema film camera & lighting equipment (~$1000)
- Era-specific set decoration & costumes (~$500)
- Location rental (~$500)

- Crew (~$1000)

Other Ways You Can Help

If you are unable to contribute a donation, your voice is just as valuable. If you connect with this story, please share this page on your social media, and however else you can. Your help to broaden the reach of this project is endlessly appreciated!

We all have "days like today". But, it is the relationships we hold dearest in our lives that remind us of who we are, and that we will be alright, because, thanks to them, we are never alone.
This story is written for us, by us, through them.

Thank you for reading, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Arielle Szpiro
