Deciding to Make a Difference
Alima lives in Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory without proper access to water, power and sanitation. I met Alima when visiting Jilkminggan on a clothing drive to deliver 500 crates of clothing to the community and help them set up an op shop. As a Mother of two, when I looked at Alima I couldn’t understand how, in a country as wealthy as Australia, we still allow remote Aboriginal Communities to live in third world conditions. So I decided to do something about it. I vowed on that day to give Alima the same choices and opportunities that my two children, Lily and Freddy, have. Because once you’ve seen it – you can’t un-see it
Working with the Traditional Owners and Elders of Jilkminggan we’ve teamed up with the award-winning Nev House to design and build high quality, sustainable housing.
In an Australian first we are using Plastic Pollution as part of the building process. We are training members of the Jilkminggan community to become certified plumbers, electricians and builders and take pride in building their own houses. This means that the Jilkminggan community will be a springboard to help other remote Aboriginal communities get access to safe, sustainable housing and be part of the building team.
Due to the success of our launch campaing and media coverage we have raised enough money to start the initial consultation with the community, We will consult with Jilkminggan for ascertain what the community want from a cultural, geographical and sustainable point and develop a living soloution that is affordable and functional on every level.
But we need your Help to Make A Difference.. We need to build 30 houses to give safety, security and pride, a right every Australian should have.
