Hello, world. My name is Jp Diaz and I am a filmmaker based in San Francisco, California. I am currently attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, there I am working on acheiving my BFA in Motion Pictures and Television with a focus on Directing. I have lived in the Bay Area my entire life. I am Afro-Cuban and Mexican. I state that fact for a reason.

Throughout my life, I have inherently always been aware of the advantages and disadvantages that my appearence propose to me. Since I was at a very young age, I have always been surrounded by an array of different culutres and heritages from around the world. I find that opportunity an extremely rich and useful one in my understanding of the way each of us individuals express ourselves and communicate with one another. In that exposure to different cultures clashing on a consistent basis, I have seen the frustrations that not only the people around me have endured, but as well as the effect its had on me. Constantly having to alter the way you communicate with the outside world, in fear of causing a negative reaction, takes its toll on the mind and spirit. Growing up all around the Bay Area, a very diverse and rich location, I have witnessed the way the guidlines of modern day society impact my life. A constant fear of never wanting to cross the line that may draw attention to you, and put you in a position of potential ridicule, is a reality that many people in this country endure. From what I've seen in my short life, I have lately been drawn to the possibility of portraying a world that fails to break a bond that is created not out of expectations that society apply to a specific group of people, but a bond that transcends those expectations and is fueled by organic love. This leads me to Dennis.

Dennis. is a short film that I have had envisioned in my head for quite some time now. It is the first script that I have written that I not only feel fulfill my own selfish artistic aspirations, but a piece of writing that is truly a reflection of my experiences in this country, and perhaps the experiences of people across the world that deal with the same ongoing issues I do. With all of that being said, I'm confident enough to say that Dennis. is a story about the strength in a relationship between two people who only have their belief in their love to fuel them, as they take on a world that feels the need to place them each in their rightful places in society. The resistance that this couple put up against anyone who try to tear them apart from each other, not only make their love stronger, but as well as further isolates them from everything and everyone around them. The distance that this couple goes to protect what they've built has no limit. I must cite the influence of this film in order to allow you to understand what emotions I am aiming to provoke-- Growing Up Black by Dennis Morris, a collection of photographs that the British photographer took in the 1970's, provided a visual representation of a world filled with people that are forced into the corner of every room; the back of every line; and in the shadows of the people wealthier than them. It is my hope, that with your help, I can bring this project to life.

I have stated the total amount of money I need as $3000. The majority of the money would go to paying specific members of my film crew, as well as the owners of private locations that would seek some type of payment if they were to allow me to shoot on their property. Other uses of the money would go into submitting the film to as many film festivals as possible; it is vital to me that this project is seen by as many people as possible. I have the determination and commitment to bring this film to life with whatever resources I'm left with after 60 days, yet I would be eternally grateful if you can go out of your way and help me not only make a film, but provide some type of evidence for the individuals in society who feel marginalized and misrepresented in this world, that shows that they are not alone.

Thank you.
