Agatha and Sammad are a former couple, they used to meet at the train station everyday, Sammad will wait for Agatha as she got off the train and ran to him for a tight embrace. Since their break up their ritual has stopped and both have moved on with lives. Agatha works in a flower shop and Sammad as a cook in an Indian restaurant. One day their normal and mundane reality gets interrupted by the news that humanity only has four hours to exist, after that life on Earth will end. Chaos. People are panicking, filled with impotence and anguish. Some people hope they can survive and deny to believe in this, some people start praying, someone shouts calling everyone a sinner, others just try to be around their loved ones and enjoy their last moments together by accepting the fact that nothing can be done. Sammad reaches the railways, he sits there. The clock is ticking, only 5 minutes left before everything is over, and just when he was loosing hope he notices her silhouette. It’s Agatha. They come close to each other, he gives her one of the earphones and they dance.
The end of the world for every person comes at its own time, it is never possible to predict or foresee that tomorrow will not come for someone. Two years ago, faced with the loss of my loved one, I began to have thoughts, sad thoughts about how it could have been otherwise, about what words could have been the last. And also I was faced with regret for the unspoken, not explained, not done.
"Derailed" is a story about the love for life, for simple things, and about accepting the inevitable. We always believe that life is long, that we always have tomorrow. We tend to postpone important words and actions for "later". This idea is painfully simple, but always relevant. In my film, I want to tell the viewer that even if the most reliable rails are laid for the train, one out of a hundred can still get off them. Life does not always go according to plan and there is not always time to wait for the best moment. And let this film be inspired by a sad event, its idea and message are very bright and addressed to any Earthling. I am happy to get a chance to share this thought with others.
Daria Lavrova is the director and writer of Derailed. She is also a film production student at Toronto Film School. Daria has been born and raised in Russia, where she was a part of a very creative and professional dance company, which made her passionate about creating and telling stories in the most artistic ways. After realizing her interest in storytelling she moved to Toronto with the hope to get the required knowledge and become a filmmaker. Daria, in her projects, focuses on the social topics and people’s relationships, presenting them in a new light, often pointing out the shortcomings of modern society, and focusing on the eternal and beautiful.
Ipek Cenkci is the producer of the film. She was born and raised in Turkey. She studied Electrical and Electronics engineering before moving to Toronto to study film. Due to her interest and love for the world of cinema, she actively took on the role of moderator in the cinema club at school. She worked as a set assistant in the theatre club. Ipek and Daria have worked together on multiple projects since they began their journey at film school together. Ipek’s vision as a director and the stories she wishes to bring to the table herself are also inspired by “human and society” topics. Derailed is relatable to her, which is also why she was excited to be a part of this project.
Tom is the director of photography for the film Derailed. He was born in Taiwan and came to Canada for his post-secondary education. Having magic and film as his passion, he was able to combine the best of both worlds and create videos that catch the eyes of the audience. This will be Tom’s debut film as a cinematographer as well as working with the director Daria. Tom has always admired Daria’s vision, and with Derailed, they were able to send a message through the lens of a camera.
Fernanda is the assistant director of Derailed. She was born and raised in Mexico where she took several workshops about screenwriting and directing actors with the writer Michael Rowe and director Luis Mandoki. With the intention to expand her education in filmmaking and hopes of starting a career as a writer and director, Fernanda moved to Toronto. She has since made a student documentary called “Life Behind the Stigma” about Jessica Starling an independent adult film creator. Fernanda’s passion for storytelling is rooted in telling stories that matter and giving voices to the people who have historically been turned a blind eye to.
