Hi, my name is Alice, and I'm the writer/director of Derive.
Everyone goes through changes, whether it be moving from location to location, or significant stages in their lives that become turning points. These moments in life should be cherished and valued, as the world is already chaotic with expectations and ways of living.
I’ve always been interested in these fleeting moments of transition. The journey that occurs before our destination, and what we learn from it.
Derive began as personal experiences and conversations at the dinner table with family. These moments can be vulnerable, but valued because they somehow make time go by slower. My love for surrealism and thriller wanted to express these moments in a fever-dreamlike event.
Your contribution will help us bring this passion project to life, market it, and submit it to festivals where we can share it with the world!
With a visit long overdue, a wayfarer son roots back to his childhood home to which a series of lurid events arise in his backyard.
'Derive' follows Kai, who is due for a check up on his mother after receiving concerning news. When he arrives, he’s confronted with a home that becomes unrecognisable, by the state of deteriorating conditions. With the pursuit to take action, he tries to reorganise order and control back into his mother’s life. From a hoarded house to putrescent phenomena, whimsical forces transpire as his mother welcomes him home.
'Derive' explores themes existential purpose, family dynamics, and growth and reincarnation through poetic storytelling and aesthetics. The film will be set in 2000's Sydney suburbia, with an art house, surreal and whimsical feel to the on screen aesthetics.
So how will we do this? With support from people like you, we are hoping to reach our goal of $6,000 to help bring our vision to life. Your generous donations could help go towards creating sets and props, paying our actors and even feeding the crew!
At $2,000: We can pay our actors and cover their costs!
At $3,000: We can feed the cast and crew!
At $4,000: We can afford some really amazing tools for our production designer, Alba!
At $5,000: Location, location, location! We can afford some really cool set design and paying for the places we film at!
At $6,000: We can afford things like travel expenses, film festival submissions, and proper costumes for our characters!
What about more than $6,000?: The sky is the limit! We can do all of the above and more! When the sky is the limit, we can go deeper into bringing our story on screen in an effective way!
After your donation, in return you are entitled to a variety of rewards, including, a copy of the film before it's release, a special thanks in the credits, a piece of real prop used in the film, a behind the scenes look at the making of the film, and even a collectors box, full of items based around the characters and aesthetic of the film. For larger investments, an associate or executive producer credit is in store.
If we do not reach our entire goal, the funds will still be going towards the essentials like paying our actors and production design.
What kind of impact will 'Derive' make? Our goal is to communicate and spread the stories of immigrant families in Australia. By bringing the story of 'Derive' on screen, we are sharing experiences close to not only members of the crew, but people all around Australia.
We hope to explore family and cultural dynamics through on screen relationships and dynamics, and incorporating the feel of that raw 2000's nostalgia that comes with suburban Sydney.
Our crew is experienced in short film productions and are all on track to graduate at the end of 2023. Our crew shares a passion for bringing stories to life on screen and sharing their creativity with the world. With your donations, 'Derive' could take a step up from a student film, to something the crew can be proud to be a part of.
