I’m Matthew Feiner, owner and founder of The Devil’s Gear Bike Shop in downtown New Haven.
I started The Devil’s Gear Bike Shop 15 years ago because I saw a real need for a New Haven-based shop that wasn’t just about selling bikes, but about building a community of riders. Our motto has always been “Turning folks into riders, and riders into cyclists.”
For 15 years now, we’ve been helping to grow and support cycling, not only as a sport or means of recreation, but as a viable transportation choice in the city.
The Devil’s Gear strives to be a good community partner. We donate our supplies and expertise to schools, events, and charities. We’ve provided all of the technical support for the Smilow Center’s ‘Closer to Free’ ride for 4 years. We assemble, tune, and deliver hundreds of bicycles purchased for star students by the City of New Haven.
We work closely with Elm City Cycling, ArtSpace New Haven, and the International Festival of Arts & Ideas to build a world-class cycling community in New Haven, hosting bike tours, maintenance clinics, and weekly training rides. We’ve partnered with the City of New Haven to implement bike friendly amenities (bike lanes, bike racks) throughout the city, including New Haven’s first separated cycle track to be built in 2015. The Devil’s Gear has been a key participant in bringing real progress to our city and we’re proud of all we’ve done.
We made changes in recent years to provide better service to our customers, including moving into a bigger, more central location, hiring more staff, and bringing in more stock. Some of these initiatives didn’t work out as we hoped, and the economic downturn affected us as it did so many businesses.
We’ve tried to always be there for friends in need, whether individuals, nonprofits, arts organizations, or the City of New Haven. Now, we’re the ones in need and we’re asking for help. We’re trying to raise some money to help cover debts we incurred during our growth.
We’re in a tight space, and we could really use a hand. If you’ve ever wanted to thank us for changing your flat, or supporting you on a ride, now is the time to help. Thank you.
