Our Story
“Dit is Ek” is my third short
film as a writer/director, the film is based on
true events, which deal with the subjects of Sexuality, Rape, Hate Crimes and
Homosexuality. The story takes places in South Africa with also the theme of
families and how it affects the people they love. Also dealing with the topic
of Empowering and Dis-empowering of women.
The amazing cast and crew I work
with strived to create a believable world for the characters I created. It is
important to me that the performances are real, strong and true, the actors on
“Dit Is Ek” embraced every challenge and took my characters from script to
screen.
This story is personal to me because
of my South African background; during pre-production of “Dit Is Ek” I
discovered that my family had been through similar victimisation, giving me the
strength to complete this film.
I hope this film finds a wide
audience and informs people about the current ‘Corrective
Rape’ epidemic in South Africa.
With
a wonderful cast and crew “Dit Is Ek” was a challenging and rewarding
experience.
The Impact
It is important to enlighten various communities about the corrective rape epidemic. Corrective rape is when a man or a group of men attack and rape Lesbians to 'turn' them straight. I want to educate others, as rape is a taboo and unacceptable act of sexual violence, however surveying various people I have discovered that some accept Corrective Rape as a good deed to the community. We need help in marketing this film to festivals to get shown so that we can tell people about this hate crime.
