Yesterday, actor Nick Offerman donated a long meat paddle from his woodshop. Did you know he's a woodworker too and has his own woodshop in LA?
Offerman Woodshop is a small collective of woodworkers and makers based out of Nick Offerman’s kick-ass wood shop near Atwater area in LA. The woodshop focuses on hand-crafted, traditional joinery & sustainable slab rescue–working with fallen trees from throughout northern California & our urban LA environment.
Thanks to Nick for supporting DIY Girls and believing that girls should be makers!

What we’ll do with your support
We want to offer a two-week summer camp focused on advanced design skills. We have over 100 middle school girls interested, advanced equipment, and a team ready to teach. The funds we raise will go towards project materials and supplies for the girls, program instructors and field trips to tech companies. Our goal is to offer two sessions of the two-week camp so that we can serve all the girls interested.

Week 1: Product Design
During the first week, girls will go from a sketch to a real product using a 3D printer & a CNC router. Thanks to the generous equipment sponsorship of The Water Buffalo Club, we were able to buy the OtherMill, a CNC router that transforms digital designs to real products. We're excited that this company is led by a woman and plan to share this with the girls!

Week 2: Fashion Technology
During week two, girls will use traditional electronics in unconventional ways using programmable sewable circuit boards to develop new wearable tech products like interactive clothes, game controllers and more.
Career connection
On the last day of the camp, we will take girls on a private tour of tech companies so that they can meet designers, software developers, and engineers working on exciting products. The girls will get an inside view of a world new to them and begin to see themselves in professional tech positions.
We have confirmed an exciting tour of Sony Santa Monica where PlayStation products are developed.

Why it’s important
We see a critical need to inspire more girls to enter technical fields and we aim to provide a continuous pathway to success. Our girls start with us in 5th grade and we need to offer more as they enter middle school.
During the summer, the majority of the girls we serve stay home and don't participate in enrichment activities due to cost. We want to offer a high quality camp for them and can only do it with your help!
We’re building an ecosystem for girls to maintain curiosity and stay engaged in STEAM. DIY Girls Summer Camp is a key part of this.

Why we need you

With your donation, you can help solidify this support system & help us be the best tech role models we can be so that our girls are motivated to gain more advanced skills and learn about careers.
The DIY Girls Summer Camp will kindle a girls’ interest in computing & engineering in a relevant and fun way.
Let’s create a cultural and curricular movement within the STEAM fields so that the perspectives of young Latinas are valued and respected.
