Short Summary
Hi, I’m Marco Kurita, a Master of Architecture candidate at the University of Texas at San Antonio. My academic journey has centered on high performance and historic preservation, but my undergraduate studies in digital fabrication sparked my passion for hands-on creation. I love blending traditional techniques with modern technology to create innovative and meaningful designs.
My master’s project proposal aims to initiate architectural and design practices in suburban neighborhoods, areas often overlooked by design professionals and left to the hands of developers. I aspire to start my career by engaging with these communities, seeking design opportunities that strengthen the social fabric in environments historically designed to be equal yet separate.
Small, low-stakes projects can gradually knit suburban blocks together, fostering a stronger community. Initiatives like community gardens, pocket parks, and public art installations encourage social interaction and collaboration. These efforts enhance the physical environment and build a sense of belonging among residents.
What This Needs & What You Get
Materials and Supplies ($1000): This includes construction materials for the shade structures, tools, and landscaping supplies for surrounding areas.
Community Engagement ($100): Organizing workshops, meetings, and events to involve residents in the planning and building process.
Contingency Fund ($300): To cover any unexpected expenses that may arise during the project.
Labor Costs ($200): While much of the labor will be volunteer-based, we will need skilled professionals for certain tasks to ensure safety and quality.
Bringing well-designed, locally-focused businesses to suburban neighborhoods can create vibrant community hubs that foster local culture and support small businesses. This not only enhances the quality of life for residents but also promotes sustainable economic growth within the community.
If we do not reach our entire goal, the funds will go to a smaller project that the neighborhood members will decide.
Contributors will receive a special dedication on the project site, with their names prominently displayed in recognition of their support. At the project’s conclusion, a social gathering will be organized to celebrate the success and foster community spirit. This event will provide an opportunity for contributors to meet, connect, and enjoy a sense of accomplishment together.
The Impact
This project is valuable to contributors because it enables them to make a tangible impact in their community, fostering a sense of pride and ownership. It improves local quality of life and supports well-designed initiatives that benefit the entire neighborhood.
Risks & Challenges
This project is personal to me because my professional degree depends on its success. There will be numerous design constraints and logistical challenges to overcome. However, the strength of small, hyper-local projects like this lies in the supportive community that surrounds them. I am confident I can rely on the directly involved neighbors and my academic colleagues for assistance.
Other Ways You Can Help
If you are unable to contribute financially, that is completely understandable. Alternatively, your support in volunteering a few hours to assist in building would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!
