As to the
subject of our present film project - New Generation Forever is a poem
of resistance by underground poet, song writer and bass player Dimitar Voev,
written in the last decade of totalitarian socialism in Bulgaria.
It lent its name to Voev's major musical project – New Generation, which
was founded in 1987, to quickly become the epitome of Bulgarian post-punk dark wave and acquire the status
of a legend following the abrupt death of its front man of a brain tumor in
1992.
One of the band’s songs by the same name has turned into a kind of anthem for
the loose anti-authoritarian community inspired by Voev’s sophisticated sense
of revolt, powerful lyrics, non-conformist music and personal charisma. In
fact, New Generation has become the signifier for the community
itself, which survived the loss of its pivotal figure and the disintegrating
forces of post-totalitarian disillusionment, never ceasing to uphold its common
libertarian values and to find ways to pay tribute to Dimitar Voev beyond the
grasp of mainstream culture.
A few English
quotes from the original poem, whose messages and 4-part structure are mirrored
by our film:
My name is Project.
The one thing I know.
I have two dioptres of shortsightedness.
I’d like to talk to saints.
…
“Set it all right!” – the shriek
Of a little old man on a skateboard.
A moment later he’s gone.
Yet another one follows.
“Speak the truth in this
Last conversation!” –
The text on a poster in front of
The Institute of Youth Formation.
“I spit on it!”
“I spit on my mother!”
“I spit on myself,
On my wheelchair life!”
For I am Nobody –
My lot in the lottery”,
A nobody said and melted away.
…
Loneliness!
Such a round loaf.
Tasty, yet dangerous.
Intoxicant. Loneliness!
“Don’t disqualify me!”
“Don’t disqualify me!”
“Mummy, I beg you, forgive me!”
…
I’m not the only one.
We’re all together in this.
Everybody, join your hands!
Oh, Lord! Save us, Lord!
I’ve waited for so long.
For 5 or 6 centuries now.
I’m coming with the rest of you.
Join hands together, everyone!
Kneeling down, standing up, crying,
Walking on, genuine, flying,
Let’s all together become
Within the temple of culture
A colossal, titanic One.
Hand-in-hand, holding on tight
Let us start howling out loud
Just like a pack of hyenas
Who will forever remain
Forever, forever
And ever
With our bellies sunken.
Lord, can you possibly hear us?
Eyes – blooded, aching with pain.
Doomed to have no compensation.
Puking on hope in disdain.
