Short Summary
An all female mariachi band
gives new meaning to traditional music through their gender, diverse racial
background and fusions. Following the
personal stories of the founder, Mireya Ramos –vocals and violin, Verónica
Medellín –guitarrón- the only Mexican
in the band, and Shea Fiol, vocals and vihuela,
this documentary takes us to a journey of passion, talent and personal
struggles as they open doors to other young musicians.
In the sexist and traditional world of Mexican
mariachi music, a young and talented musician, Mireya Ramos, formed an energetic
and exciting all female Mariachi band,
Flor
de Toloache, in New York City. She
is classically trained, has a beautiful voice, and plays the violin.
Flor de Toloache’s attire
is unique as they wear the male pants rather than the traditional mariachi
skirts, and they don’t use the hat but a flower instead; they wear high
heels and look gorgeous.
They have been invited to be a part of “Viva el Arte Festival" in Santa
Barbara, CA, January 8-12, 2015. Then we want to them to travel to Mexico and play in the heart of Mariachi tradition, namely at Plaza del Mariachi in Guadalajara Mexico.
What We Need & What You Ge
We need your support to film these two trips and performances to add these scenes to the final documentary feature. Your contribution will help us pay for the trips, photographer, sound person and editor.
MFT has played on the East coast, mainly in NY, in Canada and India. In January they will conquer California and then perform in Mexico.
Your perks will be a credit, a DVD, entrance to one of their concerts, or be part of a rehearsal session when they visit your city!
The Impact
Like many musicians Flor de Toloache travels to meet new audiences and touch them with their music and unique artistic proposal. This documentary is important to impact young people, especially girls and Latinos who can see them as role models. These women are innovators and are taking the world in their own terms. Help them reach new audiences and impact the world through this documentary.
I am an experienced film maker, committed to my community and to the arts and I believe that music can change the world. These women from different parts of the world play together and make beautiful music... they connect human beings through their voices and instruments. Let them make a change and contribute to the understanding of human kind.
Risks & Challenges
To follow these mariachis in California will be a challenge, especially to portray their impact on people while they play, have fun, live and travel continually. But this is part of their lives so this road trip is one chapter of the documentary that already includes their trip to India, several performances in NYC and later we hope to film them in Mexico, specially performing right at the heart of Mariachi culture, namely at the beautiful Plaza del Mariachi in Guadalajara, where only men play.
