Durango Botanic Gardens at the Library
Margaret Mead once said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
A group of dedicated volunteers made that statement a reality. For years the Durango Botanical Society (DBS), a 501c3 organization, has been committed to the design and development of public gardens throughout the Southwest for the purpose of education and demonstration. Current projects are located behind the Durango Public Library on the Animas River Trail. In 2010 DBS designed, developed and continues to maintain the award-winning Demonstration Garden at the library on the Animas River Trail. Prior to its development, the area was a construction debris pile. We are now embarking on fund raising for the last phase of our existing Demonstration Garden, which is also the first phase of the new Durango Botanic Gardens at the Library (DuBG). The DuBG project will include four distinct gardens surrounding the entrance level of the Durango Public Library. After engaging the public and municipal entities, the design and plans for the DuBG project have been approved and will be completed in phases as funds become available.
ROCKIN' IN THE GARDEN
We are focusing on raising funds for the continued development of these gardens. The Library, our most important partner, has generously donated $10,300.00 to get these two gardens started. The Library, its Advisory Board and Friends of the Library knew that these ambitious projects had to be funded by the COMMUNITY among other entities. This is where you come in. Specifically, we are asking the community to generously donate to help us complete the newest trend in rock gardening; the Crevice Garden along the Trail and the new whimsical Gabbro Miniature Conifer Garden. Because of the Crevice Garden’s proximity to the River Trail it is one of the most viewed Public Crevice Gardens in the state! Public gardens are non-profit cultural institutions that enhance communities in positive ways; like museums and art and science centers they are economic indicators of a healthy community. Public gardens focus on science, plants, art, and technology and provide horticulture education, entertainment and lifestyle enrichment for the community. In Durango, thousands of people walk, run and bike on the river trail or ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train. As they pass by the Demonstration Garden, and now the Crevice Garden along the Trail and Gabbro Miniature Conifer Gardens, they are treated to a sight filled with art installations and plants that thrive in our high-mountain desert region.
