Dyke Central is a homegrown, indie Oakland-based queer series. The popular dramedy was included in several “Lesbian Web Series” short lists in the last several months - by Buzzfeed, After Ellen, and others.
“The show does an amazing job of representing the queer community and nailing the nuances of the ways in which we relate to each other, and has been lauded for their diverse cast and representation of the Bay Area. If it's drama-induced hilarity that you crave, the show also includes all the uncomfortable and awkward love triangles, pentagons and parallelograms you can handle.” -- After Ellen
The ultra low-budget 20-min pilot episode was celebrated at several film festivals in 2012, such as Frameline36, Outfest & ITVFest. It also brought in almost 3500 YouTube subscribers and 1500+ Facebook fans, after being released online in 2013.
“What separates Dyke Central from every other queer series that seems to be sprouting from every digital-camera holding filmmaker with a vision, is its diversity. However, it doesn't just throw minorities into the mix to appease its audience or to get noticed, it honest-to-goodness revels in its different-ness. From the storylines to the cast, the series swells to bursting, in its display of our community's true face.” -- PNT Tv
Despite lacking the funds, the director/producer decided to take a major loan to produce four new episodes in the fall of '13. This year, “Taboo” (episode 2) was selected for screening at Dinah Shore Film Festival, Outfest’s Fusion, and Inside Out Toronto. Additionally, Frameline requested to screen all 4 new episodes in a feature program for this year's festival.

Who is the awesome team behind all this, you ask?
This summer, Team Dyke Central plans to complete production of Season 1 - that's five more episodes! Having a full finished season will open our doors to explore more distribution platforms for the show, and be on the way to financial sustainability. Sadly, we can't continue making episodes on loans!
The harsh reality: it costs around $10,000 to shoot each 20+ minute episode professionally. It's a shocking amount, we know! But it takes around five 12-hr days to shoot each episode the right way.
That said, with our team's indie expertise, last October we were able to squeeze FOUR episodes into three weeks - keeping the quality but reducing costs. This summer, our plan is even more ambitious: shooting 5 episodes in less than 4 weeks!
But that still means employing at least 7 people full time (at low-budget rates!) for those weeks. We also have to pay for equipment, hardware, food, set dressing supplies, gas & tolls for transport, and lots more. It costs money - but the great thing is, we're stimulating the economy and creating paying jobs..
We're working on creating relationships with sponsors to be on the road to financial sustainability. But, more than anything, we need the support of the people most invested in seeing new episodes come to life!
The bottom line: we have the skills & expertise, a great cast and some juicy scripts. All we need is YOU.
On top of our never-ending gratitude, and that great "I did something good!" feeling - here are some of the perks you can get:
*These are all transferrable perks, should you chose to gift them*
"Dyke Central is an easy to love and exciting new web series. It’s full of comedy, relatable characters and quality acting. It’s smart, diverse and modern. The show is so down-to-earth that it can be enjoyed as simple entertainment, but there is also a wonderful undercurrent of deeper topics open for discussion." -- The Human Experience

So broke you can't afford a latte? Here are other ways you can help!
There are dozens of ways to get involved. We're still accepting interns, need more (unpaid) crew members for practically every department.
We can also always use food donations, volunteer cooks, volunteer drivers, locations connections, and EXTRAS!

We are committed to bringing this series to life because we know that the LGBTQ community is thirsty for media that represents the diversity of its people and lives. We also hunger for a much broader spectrum of representation in television and film and believe that it's key to have more media created by women and people of color.
