How EMS training works

Scientists are always looking for ways to enhance sports performance. Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a method of improving muscle tone, size and strength and has contributed to some successes in the sporting world. 

EMS training was also used by legendary figures: Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee are well-known advocates. EMS technology has been gaining popularity for at-home wearable devices as it stimulates muscles without inducing excessive fatigue.

This is what EMS training usually looks like.

Better bang for the buck, right? But for EMS training one had to put up with the bulging cables and extra weights. The fabric-based electrodes needed to be wet enough to work properly. So the additional "wetting process" would get in the way of workouts.

We built the electrodes from scratch too.

Made with conductive silicone (patented!), the electrodes are soft, stretchy and precise. On the fabric, they are as thin as a sheet of paper.

And surprise! These electrodes can be washed but there's no need to be wet for use. (No, electrodes on other EMS suits don't work without being wet. More on this later.)

If you're someone who's looking for more fun, ElecSuit is for you. We thought regular EMS training never addressed the "fun" part.

So we started imagining something more than EMS training.

If zapping your muscles are meant to give you a workout, why not incorporate zaps into video games?

With that idea, we built ElecSuit. With ElecSuit, we wanted you to play not just any video games, but VR games. Why VR games? Because... Why not? They're more immersive.

We used to have to work for a hot and healthy body. Now you can play for it.

Play a series of VR fitness games we've developed, including Squatscape. Escape a deserted castle in the rain. Each squat will move your character, but be haste because the lightning will strike! Find a shelter to take a break, and if you're lucky you might find a healing potion.

ElecSuit will stimulate the right muscles for each exercise.

Exercises are trickier than we think sometimes. With ElecSuit, electrical signals will cue which muscles you should work on for each exercise. With the chair pose in yoga, for example, it's easy to overlook that you have to work your core too.

ElecSuit helps you by sending gentle electrical pulses on your abs, for instance, as you get in position. Put the VR on, and simply follow the electrical cues to improve your workout.

You'll definitely notice when you get shot in the back.

ElecSuit will give you electrotactile feedback as you play other VR games. ElecSuit is able to syncs with VR devices and provides electrotactile haptic feedback so whatever your character is going through, you'll feel it with ElecSuit.

Why Electrotactile Haptics? Why not vibration?

We’re all used to haptic technology, as we essentially live with our smartphones. Whenever we touch the phone screen you’ll get some feedback through the sense of touch. That’s vibrotactile feedback; haptic technology based on vibration, which is the most common type.

ElecSuit uses electrotactile feedback, that is, a sense of touch based on electrical stimulation. Unlike vibrotactile feedback that cannot provide depth and diversity of sensations, electrotactile feedback can simulate almost any sensation, say texture of an object or feel of a breeze. While vibro simulators apply pressure to skin receptors, electrotactile stimulators affect the nerve endings in addition to skin receptors with electrical impulses.

Electrotactile feedback can take many forms depending on the intensity and frequency of the stimuli delivered to the wearer’s skin. Sensations can also vary depending on the current, voltage, material, form of a wave, electrode size, contact force, hydration and skin type.

The ElecSuit can connect to all of the existing VR devices, and the team is working hard to connect ElecSuit with the VR platforms. As of now, ElecSuit connects to Oculus, Steam VR, VIVE and HP. We're working on VRChat and Zepeto.

We've preset different waveforms for each case of electrical stimulation.

Use the official app to activate the EMS workout mode. The app connects to the Controller via Bluetooth.

Select any workout: walking, running, biking, or hiking, even bodyweight or weight exercises. The app will customize the electrical waveform for each exercise.

15 levels of e-stimulation are available with various workout modes. Customize waveforms too.

We've developed three VR games, all focused on giving you the workout you need.

ElecSuit will pinpoint which muscles to focus on as you work out, and provide electrotactile feedback at the 'right muscle spots' when gaming.

Of course you could connect ElecSuit with other VR games too. We will provide a Software Developer's Kit at the end of the funding.

Follow the virtual yoga masters and get your yoga flow on.

Unlike a yoga class or following a yoga video, Follow Me Yoga VR lets you know directly and visually which muscles to focus on.

When you are posing, ElecSuit sends electrical stimulation directly to that muscle for you to feel and the muscles points are visually shown on the virtual yoga masters, too.

We are still working on increasing the number of yoga poses for you to follow. So far we have Reverse Namaste, Chair Pose, Tree Pose, Eagle Pose, and Dancer Pose a few more.

Play “Red Light, Green Light” in a possibly familiar-looking environment. 

For Squatscape, the main exercise was squats, for “Red Light Green Light” it’s LUNGES! 

Lunge to move forward and hold a workout pose when the Caller Robot turns around. 

The game has a set of workout poses for you to follow, allowing you to exercise different parts of your body. 

No need to worry too much about getting caught: there is a countdown for you to get into the pose and another one for when you to hold. 

But if you do get caught, prepare yourself for a zap that sends you back half the length you came!

We are working on making this game multi-player, but for now, there are two NPC Robots by your side. Finish the game before they do and maybe there will be a prize?

ElecSuit Standard has electrodes targeting abs, lats, quads and hamstrings.

ElecSuit Standard has four electrode pads a piece. On the top, four electrode pads target abs and lats, and with the shorts, four pads target quads and hamstrings. 

ElecSuit PRO targets pecs, deltoids, glutes and adductors in addition to the ElecSuit Standard target muscle groups.

ElecSuit PRO has eight electrode pads a piece. The eight on top targets abs, lats, pecs, and deltoids. The shorts have eight electrodes targeting quads, hamstrings, glutes, and adductors.

ElecSuit uses WaveWear's own technology ElecSil™, the patented conductive silicone electrode, to maximize your workout and gaming experience.

ElecSil™ is very flexible, stretchy and ultrathin. It's as comfy as electrodes get. ElecSil™ has high electrical conductivity, i.e. low resistance. 

ElecSil™ offers a lot of possibilities for wearable devices. ElecSil™ can send electrical signals, but it can also receive them too. It is precise enough to measure the electrocardiogram (ECG) of a small mouse. Like, really well.

Our researchers have been working on electrically conductive silicone since 2016. Unlike the typical EMS suit and electrodes, ElecSuit's electrode pads do not need to be wetted, are semi-permanent and have strong durability.
