the beginning of a creative journey

My dream of opening an art studio began 14 years ago. In 1997 my dad passed away unexpectedly. Our family was devastated. In an effort to fill her time and lonliness, my mom left her corporate job and bought a paint your own pottery studio. I decided to leave my job too and help her with this new endeavor. From there a passion for small business, pottery and art grew. The studio was our retreat from the reality of losing my dad. When she decided to sell the store-front business, I created a mobile pottery and ceramics company called Studio2You taking art to local schools, community centers, hosting birthday parties and other events. I ran the mobile pottery business for over 12 years on a part time basis so that I could also be at home with our two young children.

the next step

Three years ago I decided what our Rainier Valley neighborhood needed was an art studio and I was going to be the one to make it happen!  There are no art studios like ours in the area. In fact, we live in an area of SE Seattle which is remarkably  underserved. We love living here and wanted to bring to life this working studio so we could offer our services to the most diverse zip code in the country! During this journey I met a woman who was so inspired by my business idea that she offered to be a financial investor and partner in the company. We were on our way.

we did it!

So, after years of planning we opened Emerald City Fired Arts Studio & Gallery a neighborhood storefront pottery studio specializing in paint your own pottery, clay art, mosaics and glass fusion. Every detail of the studio was architecturally designed and carefully executed from the hand-made paint pallets to the colors on the walls. Our team worked tirelessly on every detail to make the space inviting, warm and welcoming for people of all ages and all levels of experience. We want the studio to appeal to the hobby artist as well as the professional and want to foster the idea that everyone is creative. We are also proud to feature local artists work on our gallery walls which as a by-product provides inspiration and joy to all who visit our studio.

indie gogo!

When I found out about IndieGoGo, I was moved. What an amazing concept...that others would invest their money in people's projects just because they can or that they believe in the idea. We have exhausted all other traditional avenues for securing funding and have used all our personal savings. We have investors and others counting on me to make this business a success. I am asking for $15,000 to help us get on our feet. Even though our doors are open, we have financial burdens that make it difficult to thrive. This money will help pay for build-out construction costs (which includes an expensive piece of HVAC equipment that the city of Seattle required we have but we didn’t know about prior to construction) and a second kiln that we need in order to grow our business. I am hopeful folks will find it in their hearts to help us out so we can do what we do best which is to offer artistic opportunities to our patrons, collaborate in community-building art projects and foster the idea that art is an important part of our existence as human beings. I sincerely thank you for spending the time to read this and considering donating to our project. I am confident our studio will have a positive impact on people's lives and our community.

Sincerely,

Sarah Rankin
