The Hewa/Shorsh Cancer Fund

The Hewa Regional Oncology Center was created in 2005 to provide public cancer care for the people of Kurdistan.  The Center has historically served patients from the south of Iraq, and in the past two years patients drawn from more than 150,000 internally displaced persons have been added. The Shorsh Histopathology Laboratory was established in 2008 by a retired US pathologist Dr Michael D Hughson and his colleague Dr Runnak Abdulqadir Majid. The laboratory provides services for Hewa patients and general consultations and immunohistochemistry for all regional pathologists and hospitals. The current oil crisis and the war with Daesh have severely limited governmental budgets, and the public and the University Hospital laboratories have stopped operations because of an inability to purchase supplies for surgery and pathology.

Mission

The Hewa/Shorsh Fund is dedicated to public cancer treatment in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq.  Donations will supplement the salaries of staff members and will be used for for the purchase of supplies and equipment needed for the care of cancer patients at Hewa Regional Cancer Center and public institutions affiliated with Hewa and Shorsh Hospitals.

The appeal is temporary to help through the current financial and political crises. It will not exceed 2 years or $250,000.
