My name is Veronica and over the past four and half months, fellow intern Allison and I have been completing a project management and communications internship in Uganda with an organization named CAP/AIDS. We have always been passionate about "helping" people, but this notion of "helping" has transformed into a desire to empower. Many of you have expressed interest in the work we are doing, so we figured that this would be a great opportunity to directly involve you in making a difference.
While conditions are steadily improving, northern Uganda
experienced over 20 years of conflict and human rights violations. These
hostile conditions perpetuated the poverty rates and elevated the prevalence of
HIV/AIDS in the country. Uganda has an estimated 2.3 million orphans, the
highest proportion of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS in the entire world. Who is
left to care for these children? If one cannot support their immediate family,
how do they adequately support the children they acquire? Close to 18% of
school aged children in Uganda are not enrolled in school, with an additional
drop out rate of 66%. I assure you, this drop out rate is not the result of
school being “boring.” Education does not come before food, health and shelter,
and that's the reality! Many of these children cannot attend school because
their caregivers cannot afford it; they are forced to drop out because of
school fees, ill family or even early marriage.
“30” is an important number here in Uganda and holds great
relevance. $30 is the average monthly income (much less in some areas). $30 is
also representative of the school related fees that inhibit children from
attending school.
What We Need and What You Get
Making a difference can be easy! This is an individual project, and thus we will manage the funds and ensure that 100% is invested in the intended women.
Our goal is to economically empower women to be able to support themselves and their families, and thus to ensure the education of the children who depend on them. For $30, a woman can buy five chickens that upon reproducing can pay the school fees of the children she cares for. For $30, a woman can begin to grow her small business tailoring clothes, selling maize or stocking the shelves of her store. The idea is investing now, for a sustainable future.
With $500 we could DIRECTLY economically empower a minimum of 10 caregivers and their child dependents. Over the past four months, fellow intern Allison and I have interviewed and identified the needs of many caregivers linked to CAP/AIDS. We have met many more than 10 people who are in need, and if the $500 goal was exceeded this could extend to more women and thus educate more children. If the $500 goal is not raised, those with the most prominent needs will be assisted.
You get the satisfaction of knowing your contribution goes directly to the people we have identified as most in need. You get that warm and fuzzy feeling of giving, knowing you have positively impacted the future of a woman and the children she cares for! I promise to coordinate updates directly from those you have empowered!
What Impact Will You Have?
The impact is simple! Not only will this money help to ensure that children can attend and stay in school, but it will also improve their daily living conditions. By empowering a woman, and educating children, you are directly influencing the perpetual cycle of poverty that exists for many of these families. The outcome is likely to be reduced rates of HIV, improved meal consumption, adequate shelter and clothing, and an educated generation of children.
CAP/AIDS has worked hard over the past 10 years to implement successful projects with hundreds of beneficiaries in Uganda. These projects have built the capacity of local organizations and local people through establishing sustainable and economically empowered livelihoods. These beneficiaries have moved leaps and bounds from where they once were, but by empowering them one step further a world of difference will be made.
