Our Story

We are an intercultural group of students from different indigenous communities of Guatemala (Maya K´iche´ from the highlands, Xinkas from the lowlands and coastal areas and Garífunas from the caribbean coast).  The Cultural cooperation program called COSICA from a not-for-profit institution of Guatemala (IRIPAZ),  have inaugurated the Intercultural Audiovisual Training center (Aula INCREA)... and thanks to that we are receiving a super-good training in "Intercultural Audiovisual Creation". For the last six months, we have studied and practiced the art of film-making... keeping always in mind that our greatest strength is our diversity.

Our film proposal has been selected to become a reality, thanks to the financial support from UNESCO´s International Fund for Cultural Diversity. We have developed a short-film script and shooting plan that deals with some of the most important social problems of our youth, such as migration, broken families and violence against women.

We are going to be shooting in several locations along Guatemala next January and February, with the coaching and guidance of a bunch of very skilled professionals and teachers of the audiovisual sector.  After that, we will promote our film worldwide using both the net and festivals.

The video above is a short documentary film about the first phase of the training. It is in Spanish, so we hope you can more or less understand it! In our vimeo page (link at the bottom) you can see many other videos made by us. If you know spanish and english and would like to help in getting everything translated, check the "other ways you can help" section.

The Impact

With this initiative, we are contributing to reshape our society. We, the indigenous people of Guatemala, were historically and systematically marginalized, having no voice in our own society. With the arrival of the digital era on mass communication medias, and the lowering of the cost of a production,  we have found a great chance to raise our voice and sensitize our people. Since the inception of INCREA training center, we are starting to have a chance to access to formal trainings and built the needed capacities to create our own media contents.

We are the first generation of students of INCREA training center and, most importantly, this will be the very first intercultural movie written, directed, interpreted, edited and promoted by indigenous youngsters of this wonderful yet challenging country we live in: Guatemala.

Thanks to the continuous support of COSICA program and the funds donated we can assure that the movie will be filmed and promoted. We need your help to fully cover our production... and make this movie as good as we know we can do it. Joining this cause you will be part of a small yet important event of our modern history: the day indigenous youngsters from Guatemala (the only country in Central America where indigenous people represents around 60% of its population) started to show to the world their creativity and imaginary through media.

What We Need & What You Get

Albeit having got this funds from UNESCO we would need an extra support from the gogoers to make this dream come true, as the UNESCO funds will only cover around 80% of our budget. We need another 20% to be able to:

  • Fully logistic needs covered for the crew for the whole scheduled shooting plan. Even if our group (8 people) was selected to take our proposal into reality, our original plan was designed to ensure participation of all the students of the curse (30 people). We think that all the proposals were fantastic and every student shall enjoy the filming process as a reward to their effort and motivation. Approximately 1.700USD will provide all the logistic needs to the whole team for the 5 days of shooting.
  • Technical equipment rental. We already have a good video camera, some microphones and other audio-video equipment in the INCREA training center ...but with your help we would like to rent some lightning gear, a monitor and other shooting equipment. We calculated that this would be around 800USD for the whole scheduled shooting days.
  • Other rentals and purchases for art department. We would like to rent other things (as an old car  and a truck that will appear on the film), and buy some fabrics and other atrezzo things to give a proper ambient to the movie. Our budget for that was estimated in 700USD.
  • Promotional stuff. In this category, we include some expenses not fully covered by UNESCO´s funds related to the premiere and promotional tour of our short-film. some of this things are a free DVD package, a poster, flyers as well as other promotional staff. 1.000USD is what we are going to spend on that.

Your contribution will make a difference in the global media network, as we are going to give voice and image to those that never had before: our cultures for instance...and this is the most important thing that you get: be part of something that will plant the seed of a new way of communicating, where marginalized ethnic groups start to show their points of view. In other words, what you get is the certitude that your money helped empowering our people, and this is a very good and  noble cause.

Besides this certitude that we wanted to put on top of the list, there is some other things that you will get depending on your contribution amount. You can check the "perks" we have prepared. We really hope you like them!

Other Ways You Can Help

If you want to collaborate with us besides the financial support, there are many ways you can help us.

  • Sharing our website and Facebook fan page on your FB profile or any other social media you are in. Once the movie is done...sharing the link with the video would be fantastic as well!
  • Volunteering. If you are a professional of any creative and multimedia sector (such as web designer, graphic designer, filmmaker, etc.)... you speak some Spanish and you can make it to Guatemala by your own means... we have a international volunteer program where you can collaborate with us giving trainings to our students or ToTs (training of trainers) to our staff.
  • Online volunteering. You can also help us in developing a nicer website and other media contents.. or translate them into English!

If you want to collaborate in this or any other way, do not hesitate to contact us thru this email adress: guillermo.maceiras@iripaz.org

To know more about us, please feel free to click in the links below. All the info is in spanish, except the briefing that is in English (sorry for our not so good English language skills ...and thanks in advance to help us get all translated!!).
