WHAT:

While on a drive with a friend in the English countryside, playwright Peter Schaffer was told a story about a 17 year old boy who had blinded 6 horses in a barn outside Suffolk.  At once fascinated and disturbed by the story, Schaffer set out to write what is now his revered drama Equus.

Known for its brilliant mix of clenched British realism and lurid fantastical elements, Equus has attracted audiences since 1973 where it performed for 2 years in London. It later moved to Broadway and featured  renowned actors Anthony Hopkins, Richard Burton, and Anthony Perkins as the child psychologist, Martin Dysart. In the most recent Broadway run Dysart was played by the late Richard Griffiths, with Daniel Radcliffe as Alan, the boy in question.

Equus will perform in Columbia Unviersity's Schapiro Studio Theater.
