Overview
Set in a small town in Southern India, using a traditional Bollywood format, ‘Evening Shadows’, a feature film by award winning filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan, tells the story of a mother-son bond put to test by harsh truths and social circumstances. We are CROWDFUNDING TO COMPLETE THE FILM and call upon your generosity to support a project that will have great impact in changing mindsets. Exciting perks assured. 10% of funds will support setting up an organized Parents' Support Group in Mumbai.

AN IMPORTANT STORY TO BE TOLD, NOW

In a small town in Southern India, when Kartik, a young gay man, comes out to his conservative mother Vasudha, she has no one to turn to dispel her own fears and self doubts, and understand her loving son’s truth. She has to find her own ways to deal with her intolerant husband Damodar and the unforgiving traditional society around her. ‘Evening Shadows (Surmaee Shaam)’ is a universal story about a mother-son bond and its emotional strength to withstand the ravages of time and the harsh realities of our society.

WHERE WE STAND NOW

Shooting for the film has been completed and post-production has been completed till edit lock. Background score and audio post production (dialogue clean-up, foley, sound effects) are in progress, but stalled due to paucity of funds. Color grading, VFX, credits and subtitling have to begin.

We need your support to make this film happen.

WHAT IS THE FILM’S USP:

  1. The film has been shot in exquisite locales in Southern India, which adds a new dimension – not only being evocative, but also rich in visual and aural subtexts, metaphors and symbols.
  2. The film has been conceived, written and produced by award winning team at Solaris Pictures - Sridhar Rangayan (director, producer, writer) and Saagar Gupta (creative director, writer, producer, lyricist) who have to their credit several acclaimed LGBTQ films (Pink Mirror, Yours Emotionally, 68 Pages, Purple Skies, Breaking Free)
  3. The film’s lead actors Ananth Mahadevan and Mona Ambegaonkar are veterans with years of experience and greatly respected by audiences across India. The film’s young lead Devansh Doshi and Arpit Chaudhary are bright actors who hold a great promise for future.
  4. The composer of the title song Shubha Mudgal is a very renowned singer who is very popular.
  5. The crew boasts of accomplished professionals with mainstream, acclaimed film credits: DOP - Subhransu Das (Poorna, Filmistaan), Editor - Pravin Angre (B.A.Pass, Shagird, Ahista Ahista, Breaking Free - National Award winner), Sound Design - Madhu Apsara (Badlapur, Stanley Ka Dabba, Johnny Gaddar - Filmfare Award winner)
  6. The film’s trailer released in May has gone viral with around 50000 views on Facebook and 9000+ views on YouTube
  7. The film has already received a good media coverage. Check news links HERE

HOW MUCH DO WE NEED

We are raising $15,000 (approx INR 1,000,000) through crowdfunding on Indiegogo.

The film is an independent low-budget film with a total budget outlay of $120,000 (INR 7,700,000). The film has been partly crowdfunded (pre-production crowdfunding of about $15,000), self investment ($52,500) and a private investor ($7500). Apart from this proposed post-production crowdfunding of $15,000 we are also tapping four more private investors contributing $7500 each.

HOW WILL IT BE USED

FILM LINKED WITH ADVOCACY

By supporting this crowdfunding campaign, you are not only supporting the film Evening Shadows, but also help kick-start a movement in India similar PFLAG. The film is linked with advocacy efforts to form an organized Parents' Support group in Mumbai and later elsewhere in India.

In the first round of crowdfunding for Evening Shadows production, carried out in November, 10% was set aside to form a support group for parents of LGBTQ persons in Mumbai.

On February 11th, a workshop was held, bringing together 10 parents, to discuss the issues they face and how they can form a group to help other parents. Check album HERE

Following up on this, a panel discussion was held on May 27th at 8th KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. Watch video HERE

10% of funds raised with this Indiegogo campaign will support programs of the Parents' Support Group in Mumbai.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Evening Shadows is not only about a son coming out to his mother, but about how the mother tries to come to terms with this harsh truth, which is against all her beliefs and ingrained moral values. On another level, the film is also as much about the mother ‘coming out as a woman’, and claiming her due place within a traditional patriarchal society, and giving space for her own aspirations and opinions.

In India, especially in smaller towns, there are no support groups (like PFLAG), no information or guidance available, no one to turn to. Myths, social taboos and religion complicate matters further. The film tries to unravel the issues in a dramatic and sensitive manner, while still being entertaining to a mass audience. This is a film for every parent and family across India and across the world.

We hope the viewers take home a sensitive story that offers insight and hope about relationships that are put to test by life’s realities and shifting shadows of time.
