Summary
Cyclone Winston, a category 5 cyclone, has left a trail of death and widespread destruction in its wake and our people need help. NOW.
A remote region called the Yasawa Islands was one of many regions in Fiji to be devastated by Winston. More than 90% of staff employed by The Barefoot Collection come from villages in this region. Apart from the emotional trauma and loss of life, they now also face the threat of water-borne diseases, dengue, chikungunya and Zika, if their communities and utilities are not restored.
In order to mobilise our partners, friends and guests to assist our communities, we have established the Loloma Levu Fund.
“Loloma” is Fijian and most commonly translates to love or mercy and “levu” means big, great, large or many. In many cases, the expression “loloma levu” is an idiom, meaning "lots of love" and in the context of this campaign, we hope that many people all over the world can, through a small (or big!) gesture, show their support by helping to rebuild 6 villages.
6 Villages. 60 Days. $6 million. That’s 1 million people donating just $6!
We have set a target of $1 million per village, to rebuild homes, the healthcare centre, restore utilities like water tankers and sanitation, and infrastructure. The villages we are supporting that have been hardest hit are Namara, Naboro, Yamata, Kese, Muaira and Soso.
Funds will be distributed by The Prime Ministers Disaster Relief Fund and whatever is raised will be equally distributed between these villages.
The Impact
The Kese Health Centre was established in 1970 and supports five settlements, seven schools and five villages. It is staffed by one nurse and one doctor and helps roughly 500 children and 315 pregnant women each year. Much of the support provided is for maternal, infant care and community health. The center has two beds and also assists with common injuries like cuts and lacerations.
The Namara Village School & Kindergarten was founded in 1980. The school serves 85 children from ages 3 through 13 years old. There are four classrooms and four teachers teaching eight classes, as two grades are taught together in each room. Once the children finish their primary education, the majority then attend boarding school on the main island of Vitu Levu for their high school education.
The Muaira Village Library was established 1 year ago and operates from the primary school in Muaira Village. The primary school serves 77 children from the ages of 3 through 14 years old. The Muaira Village Library provides literature and academic support material for the inhabitants of Kese (251 people) and Muaira (165 people).
These vital community resources have destroyed and will need to be re-built from the ground up.
