"By now you know that we sometimes take an unexpected road to find our voices. Weldon’s book (The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film) was proof that even the most unlikely idea had a chance. If these movies existed, then surely whatever measly story was bubbling in my brain was not so preposterous. "

We are not weird, abnormal or different. We are not gay, straight, transgender, strange, dwarfs, giants, disabled, challenged, or out of the mainstream. We’re you, and whether you know it, or not; you are us. And you belong. Welcome to the Psychotronic. Throughout the history of the genre, cult, or “b-movies,” the willingness to accept those of different lifestyles, cultures, and those looked down by “proper” society has been a mainstay of this community. Since the first outsider picked up a camera and began filming out of the desire to make a dream a reality, independent of the studios, the willingness to accept others was a necessity. And over four decades ago, Michael Weldon began documenting and cataloging the movies in his magazine Psychotronic TV. From these humble beginnings, two books: The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film and The Psychotronic Video Guide, along with his magazine, were published, inspiring future filmmakers, comedians, musicians, artists, and those searching for something different, to find these hidden gems of movies in the pages of his books.
Meet Michael J. Weldon
The Psychotronic Documentary Indiegogo Campaign from jeff adams on Vimeo.
If you are a movie fanatic then you already know who Michael J. Weldon is. His books have adorned your expertly-crafted library of film catalogs, heady critiques, and deep dives into everything Stanley Kubrick-ian since you first started with only a copy of Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide and an obsession with Bert I. Gordon. You love movies, but not of the ordinary, run-of-the-mill variety. Like Michael, you have no desire to walk the beaten path of Hasbro toys destroying cities and hanging out with Wahlbergs. Your favorite Wahlberg goes by the name Eddie Adams and will gradually be invited into the colorful world of adult film and a less colorful cocaine addiction.
Michael J. Weldon informed us on what to see, where to go, and who was important through his two books, The Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film and The Psychotronic Video Guide, and in his earlier fanzine, Psychotronic TV, or in his later magazine, Psychotronic Video. No matter how you discovered Michael J. Weldon, once you did the addiction to his special brand of movie knowledge was almost as powerful as that sweet nose candy Eddie Adams was willing to sell his young body for.
What It's All About
This is no ordinary documentary project; this is the documentary Ed Wood never had the opportunity to make. A team of semi-professionals and clumsy amateurs will set in motion a string of techniques and events from the movies cataloged inside the Psychotronic Encyclopedia as a means to visually recreate the stories from interviews with the author, individuals responsible for inspiring his literary journey, celebrities, and those who were inspired by the book. Bert I Gordon’s rear projection, Ed Wood’s clumsy staging, and Roger Corman’s inventive ways of tackling a threadbare budget are just some of the ways in which the stories will be shaped, and in the process, art will be created.
Our intention is not to just make a documentary that only appeals to a niche of fans, but to create the first “Z-grade” documentary paying homage to the artists, collaborators, and the author that gave the world “The Psychotronic.”
The no-budget quickie.
Help see this story come to life through Michael J. Weldon's eyes. Discover why so many artists, filmmakers, musicians, and fans could never get enough of his Psychotronic publications. Currently in development, and moving into pre-production mid-October, we need your help to enter this next exciting phase of The Psychotronic Documentary. What does this mean? Well, travel and equipment. Our needs include a trip to Seattle for footage and research of the Something Weird home offices and Lisa Petrucci's Psychotronic home, and to New York for a one-on-one interview with Frank Henenlotter and other's within the East Village. In addition, lighting and other equipment is much needed. Of course, that is only the short term goal.

Distribution
Although we are currently only in the late stages of development, we do have a thorough plan for how we are going to get the documentary out into the world. Along with a typical film festival rollout, our reach will also include events with Psychotronic Film Organizations and cult movie groups like the Psychotronic Film Society and others. We also plan a massive grassroots campaign through these agencies to build word of mouth in several markets. With the slogan, "Have you ever been really good at being really bad?" we will present events where people will share their stories of when they attempted something (art, film, work, etc.) and failed miserably at it. Through Facebook Live, Twitter and Instagram we will broadcast these events through social media for others to enjoy and build interest in the documentary.
