FLICKER FEATHER: EDC Chisel Blade
The Northern Flicker is a woodpecker found in North America. Their chisel beaks have been known to torment my dad's cabin in Eastern Texas. How's that for name inspiration? This little chisel blade cuts, sparks fire, sharpens, and signals so you can explore with confidence.
SCOUT FEATHER: EDC Drop Point Blade
A scout is prepared; a scout knows the environment and loves the outdoors. Confidence radiates from a scout. Welcome to the Scout Feather -- the ideal tool in the quiver of preparedness. This small and mighty blade cuts, sparks fire, sharpens, and signals. Take it along for any adventure and explore with confidence.
WHY "FEATHER"?
Why is there a theme of feathers in the naming of the knives? Along with being lightweight and beautiful, like these knives, feathers hearken back to my Native American heritage.
![]()
OE Founder, Mike, with his father, a 20 yr Army Vet, participating in a traditional Native American smudging ceremony
My dad has an eagle feather hanging from his rearview mirror. With a select few exceptions, only Native Americans are legally able to possess eagle feathers. Feathers connect me with my rich heritage.
To many Native Americans, feathers symbolize a strong connection between The Creator, the person holding the feather, and the bird it came from. Feathers hold a special place in their hearts, representing honor, power, wisdom, trust, strength, and freedom.
In a similar vein, our feather knives become more than just a tool; they're a symbolic link to the qualities of honor, power, wisdom, trust, strength, and freedom. It's like acquiring a unique gift from the outdoors, forging a connection beyond the tangible – a blade that embodies not just utility, but a deeper significance.

Add-On: 12' OE Survival Cord
Perfect to create a neck strap for your knife, and always a good idea to have some survival cord available. Add-on a 12' hank of our custom survival cord when you confirm your contribution/perk.
Outdoor Element's Custom 550-strength Survival Cord includes:
1 waxed infused jute = waterproof fire tinder
1 line of 20-pound braided fishing line
7 strands of nylon
![]()
Cut a section of cord, pull out the wax-infused jute, then scrape the jute with the back of the blade to expose small fibers and form into a bird's nest. Throw a spark by scraping the spine of the blade down the ferro rod at a 45° angle while applying pressure. (It typically takes me 2-3 sparks to light up.) Simple and effective.

We are Outdoor Element, a small startup based in Colorado, sparking confident outdoor adventure through innovative gear.
Mike, OE Founder and CEO, left his “day job” as an engineer in aerospace just over 6 years ago to pursue his passion for the outdoors and entrepreneurship. He now spends most of his time inventing & engineering multi-purpose, solution-based EDC (everyday carry gear) for everyone from seasoned survivalists to nature novices to get out and explore with confidence.
Mike partnered with Joe (a 25+ year consumer product operations executive) in 2015 to help bring Mike's myriad of product ideas to life. Maylynn joined the team in 2021, and Darren in 2023, helping to free up Mike's time to continue creating. With 9 patents and counting, there's been a lot of innovating going on!
Given the Native American name of 'Bodaway', meaning 'Fire Maker', it's no wonder we see a fire theme in so much of the adventure and survival gear by Mike. Flicker Feather and Scout Feather are great examples of that love of fire and the desire to maximize the utility of every piece of gear. Explore with Confidence with gear by Outdoor Element.

Please note, for any backer outside of the United States:
First, we love you, thanks for your support.

Please note, for any backer within the United States:
We also love you and thank you for your support.
We have done our best to abide by all of our laws and regulations but laws are always changing.
The Flicker Feather may be considered a “tool” as it holds a true chisel profile.
Both the Flicker and Scout blade profiles are fixed and come with a sheath. The Flicker blade length is 2.38” and Scout measures 2.65”
Please research your state's laws and abide by them.
Here is a great site to check the laws in your state, simply click on your state and read up. https://www.akti.org/state-knife-laws/
FYI: Fixed-blade knives in California with blades of 2.50” or longer are illegal on college/university/school premises. Plus any knife with a blade longer than 4.00” is illegal in a public building. Otherwise, California law has no laws regulating the maximum lengths of knives. However, certain localities do: In Los Angeles for example, you cannot openly carry knives with blades longer than three inches.
Also, it is unlawful to carry concealed dirks or daggers (fixed blades are considered daggers in CA).
BTW These cut and spark fire...they're not a toy.
For sure, not a toy for kids. For adults? hmmm....Ya, still not a toy; however, they have been known to bring out that Christmas-morning-smile on many adults' faces.
⚠️ WARNING: These products can expose you to carbon monoxide and soot, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. For more info, go to P65Warnings.ca.gov and visit our Understanding Prop 65 page.
Risks and challenges
This isn’t our first rodeo on crowdfunding. So far, we've completed five crowdfunded campaigns. Our most recent was Sparky & Scratch Key, the fire-starting carabiner and customizable key combo which funded in less than seven hours. Other campaigns include our flagship product, the Firebiner®️, a fire-starting carabiner multi-tool using our EverSpark™️ technology, and also Handled™️, our pot-gripper & fuel canister recycling tool. We've also successfully launched another nine products directly with retailers. Yeehaw!
With any new product launch, there are inherent risks and unforeseen challenges; natural disasters like hurricanes, fires, etc., as well as supply chain issues. No matter what challenges come our way, we will always be upfront with you and totally transparent. Rest assured we'll communicate status updates and we always, always, always deliver on crowdfunded campaigns. Thanks for your support and for joining us on this journey.
Sustainable Distribution
We recently adopted eco-friendly mailers and we love them! We're also diligent in eliminating single-use plastic from our packaging. Each blade comes in a cardboard box with no foam inserts. We consciously take these and other small steps because we know they can have a meaningful impact. We believe your gear should last a lifetime -- its packaging shouldn't.
We are committed to being as eco-friendly as possible and are always accepting new ideas.
