Overview
Floating Away is a music video that will convey the importance of time through people and places. The music video will follow the life of an elderly woman, who wakes up one early morning and reflects on her life. We will follow important stages of her past, as we see her in her youth. Highlighting the importance of people such as friends and family, and how they impacted on her life.

Summary

Our team consists entirely of students. We are all in our final year at SAE QANTM currently undertaking a Bachelor of Film. For our final project, our group Director and fellow classmate, Christian Escobar, is looking to create a music video, using a song that has been written and performed by Bruce Hathcock. Christian Escobar has worked with Bruce in previous music videos focusing on the artist himself, but this time, we are looking to create an emotionally moving music video where an older woman reflecting on her life reveals to us the important stages of her youth, bringing her to where she is today.

This music video will be a comment on time - on how people change with time, but places and things remain the same, and with those places and/or items, the memories and emotional connection we hold dear to them remains unchanged.

This music video is important to us because we have had the opportunity to make several short films and documentaries which has been a great experience, but a music video is a project we have been wanting to collectively work on for a while, we were just waiting for the right song and now we found it.

  • The song itself falls under the RnB genre. However, it’s different to the “RnB” we listen to nowadays. The song is calm and definitely has an old school aspect to it. Floating Away was written and produced by Bruce Hathcock, a very talented artist, who has worked with artists such as Bone Thugs 'N' Harmony.

What We Need & What You Get

  • Our team consists entirely of students and it is for this reason that funding is extremely important to us. Our main expenses, according to our budget plan, will be mainly in paying location fees (which vary from $100-$150 per location). Other expenses have been included below for you to see where your donations will be benefitting us:
  • Lenses:  $600 per week
  • Car mount and grip: $60 per day (filming will be done over 8 days)
  • Locations: $100-$150 (7 locations)
  • Production and set design  (this includes fitting out a bedroom to look like our main character's room with a teenage vibe, but with a 1970's feel as this is the time period for our music video). A budget of $150-$200 has been calculated to be efficient to be able to dress our sets for each location.
  • Catering: $100 per day
  • Travel expenses for our actors (we have allocating $20 per day per person)

  • Costume and set design is an important aspect of film. In order to create something cinematically beautiful, we want to ensure that these items aren't overlooked. We need costume for 6 actors (Main protagonist, her older self, her mother, a love interest and two friend). Because each character has a set personality, their look must portray this. The types of items we are looking for include, but are not limited to:
    • A necklace for our protagonist (given to her in her youth, that she still holds onto in her old age for it's sentimental value).
    • Full costume for all six characters (taking into account that we will need at least two differing costumes for most characters to depict a sense of time).
  • Travel costs will also be covered under the donations that we receive. There are several scenes that will be shot inside a car, for this reason, we must also consider petrol costs (included in this will be actors travel, to and from locations).
  • Catering for our actors is also important to us as a team. All crew are currently full time students, so any donations that can be put towards feeding everybody adequately will be greatly appreciated.

The Impact

Each member of our team is dedicated to producing a high end music video. We have all worked together on previous projects and have proven to be an efficient team. Our skills are varied within this group and through hard work we have been able to produce various short student films such as:

  • Genesis
  • Hypersomnia
  • Agoraphobia

As mentioned, our group has been looking forward to making  a music video with this song, performed by Bruce Hatchcock for quite some time because of it's uniqueness and the ability of the song to take you on a journey, with its words alone. We want to be able to aid Bruce's story telling through this music video.

Below we have included a link that contains the musical talents of Bruce Hatchcock.

Other Ways You Can Help

Not everyone can contribute and that is totally fine! But if you can't help with our budget concerns, not to worry, there are other ways we can use the help! Sharing our cause is the best way to give us a hand. Helping us get the word out there about our passion and drive to make something beautiful for Sydney is still a huge help to us.
