Floored  follows Matthew, a young man riddled with guilt and desperate for escape. He’s taken to working for an events team that looks after overdosed ravers. Here he crosses paths with Kieran, a chaotic and highly intoxicated young man that he can’t help but see himself in. Although he struggles to vocalise it, it’s clear that Kieran also seeks to escape, caught in a loop of intoxication and desperate for some sort of meaningful sobriety.

In Scotland, one of the few circumstances in which men feel safe to share their feelings is when they’re under the influence of alcohol and stimulants. This country has only recently emerged from a culture of knife crime and violence, and our central protagonist’s extreme guilt over his past is unfortunately something many will be able relate to.

The screenplay is based on writer-director Fin’s personal experience as a young man living in Glasgow. The idea was initially conceived after a summer of stewarding at a musical festival where he had to look after a young boy who had taken too much MDMA and was left alone by his friends.

Our goal is to explore and represent the spaces in which men feel safe to express themselves as well as some of our common toxic characteristics and behaviours.

The script was inspired by the writing of local artists like Kieran Hurley, James Price and Graeme Armstrong.

The film's visual style takes inspiration from the cinematography of Rina Yang. In particular, her work on Top Boy, with her beautiful dark exposures and use of handheld with large format cameras. Similarly, we hope to echo the rugged authenticity of work from directors like Lynne Ramsay and Benny and Josh Safdie, casting individuals with some form of lived experience of the subject matter and exploring complex and ultimately flawed characters.

Our project is lucky enough to be supported by a wealth of local artists, crew, and creators. Using the combined resources of Screen Academy Scotland in conjunction with Edinburgh Napier University allows us access top-of-the-line equipment, studio space, and post-production facilities. However, with this in mind, our project still requires the support of contributions.

All contributions will go towards the following:

  • PRODUCTION DESIGN: The central framework – and literal/metaphorical structure of the story – is the tent. Sourcing it will require a considerable sum and it’s integral to the viewing experience that we get it “right”.
  • CAST: We are fortunate to count upon local actors who are willing to give their time to us, we must compensate them fairly, including providing them food and transportation.

Your contribution, no matter the amount, will make an appreciable difference to our project.

Fin is a writer-director from Glasgow at Screen Academy Scotland. He has a background working in film festival programming and is a freelance script reader. Fin was selected for both the highly competitive Network Scheme for the Edinburgh TV Festival as well as a development trainee at Synchronity Films. This industry experience, coupled with his personal projects, academic background, and fascination with film has prepared him for the role of writer-director. Fin is interested in cinematic storytelling that explores escapism, social class and masculinity.

Annie has an academic background in ethnography and research, this, coupled with her professional experience in financial tech and passion for film has ultimately brought her to study production at the Screen Academy. When Fin first approached her with the script for Floored, she immediately saw its potential and wanted to join. Having previously collaborated with Fin, she completely trusts his creative vision.

Andy Wells comes from the Highlands of Scotland. Growing up, he had many visually creative opportunities - through art, photography and technical design that inspired his move to cinematography. Undertaking a four-year undergraduate degree, Andy had many opportunities to grow his visual and technical camera skills and knowledge while creating visually striking narrative driven short films, with his work being showcased at film festivals.  His work is largely inspired from cinematographers like Hoyte Van Hoytema, Bill Pope and Maryse Alberti. As a cinematographer, he loves to experiment with close-intimate shots to enhance a characters motives or story - this is one of the reasons he's chosen this project, as he is able to use an intimate shooting style that will enhance the overall story being told.

Mark’s skill and passion for editing has been demonstrated in not only his academic background but industry experience and personal hobbies. As a recent graduate of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences with a degree in Communication and Multimedia Design, Mark has already created shorts, business, and promo videos. His hope for fundraising is that he can avoid the burden of having to “fix it in post!” and just focus on the story instead.

Jack is twenty-five and hails from the far away land of Ireland. Ever since tagging along on to a film shoot when he was twelve, he’s loved everything to do with sound in cinema. Jack has also attended his fair share of music festivals over the years, which he now swears was all research for this film. When he's not off gallivanting, Jack spends his time honing his sound designs skills, and is now an Avid certified user for Pro Tools. He is determined to bring that experience to this production and create an engaging and immersive soundscape for audiences to get lost in when watching Floored.

Harry is an English screenwriter, currently studying on Edinburgh Napier’s screenwriting masters after graduating from the University of Derby’s film production. Harry intends to be a versatile screenwriter and filmmaker, focusing on impactful and socially relevant character dramas for film and television. After working with director Fin on shorts ‘Tune In’ and ‘Thin Ice’ as screenwriter, Harry will be taking on the role of script editor, ensuring Fin’s vision as writer reaches its full potential on the page.

Amelia Kidd is a multi-instrumentalist and composer, best known for her work in The Ninth Wave. With 2 SAY Award shortlists, AIM nomination and a feature on Netflix’s ‘Umbrella Academy’, her work has achieved a variety of commercial success.

As well as self-producing and composing numerous records with The Ninth Wave, Amelia composed the soundtrack for Alia Ghafar’s ‘Scuzz’. Festival selections include GSFF, EIFF and British Shorts Berlin.

Inspired by the works of Mica Levi and Daniel Avery, Amelia uses analogue synthesisers and the human voice to create an alternate sonic world. She is due to study Sound Arts at the University of the Arts London (UAL) in September.

John McGeary is an actor and English teacher who starred in one of Fin's first short films USB. He had a lead part in both runs of the Citizens Theatre's Divided City and has spent years studying acting and performance. John is especially excited to step into the shoes of a character as reckless and complex as Kieran.

Saul is beginning his second year studying acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He has starred in multiple award winning short films and was in Martin McCardie and Stuart David's play Paisley to Paolo in 2019. Saul is extremely passionate about contemporary drama and is perfectly suited to be Floored’s lead protagonist.

Thank you friends, family, and those we have yet to meet, for visiting this page! We understand that many will not be able to provide financial support to this page, but it would be incredibly helpful if you could share this page on social media. We believe this to be story a worth telling and based around a subject matter that is genuinely not spoken about enough.

Seeing conversations like the ones in our film on screen is important and help in any capacity for our film would mean a lot.
