Jazz and Bluegrass: The Rosenthals, Father-Son Duo, Raising funds to help promote forthcoming CD, "Fly Away"

The Rosenthals are a collaboration between foik and bluegrass singer-songwriter, Phil Rosenthal, and his son, jazz trumpeter, Daniel Rosenthal.  Though the two have been playing music together for twenty years, "Fly Away" marks their first recorded output as a duo.  "Fly Away," showcases nine originals songs and five new arrangements of traditional American foik songs. The music combines foik, bluegrass, jazz and other influences, showcasing Phil's wondrously warm voice, a burnished Johnny Cash baritone, alongside Daniel's rich trumpet tone. The new CD will be released on June 4 by Phil's American Melody Records.

Phil Rosenthal is best known for his long run as lead singer and guitarist with the popular bluegrass group The Seldom Scene.  He’s also nationally renowned for his instrumental skills on banjo and mandolin, and as a songwriter and record producer.  His song, "Muddy Water" was covered by Johnny Cash, Nick Cave and Bill Monroe.  Daniel Rosenthal is a Boston-based trumpeter/composer.  He has been a member of the Either/Orchestra since 2006 and has toured throughout Europe, Africa, and North America with the group.  He also leads his our quartet, with whom he recorded his debut album, "Lines," in 2011.

Message from The Rosenthals:

Though we have been playing together for more than two decades, "Fly Away" is the first true recorded collaboration between the two of us.  The idea for the album came about during a tour of the UK in 2010.  Phil was set to do the tour as a solo act but hurt his back several weeks before the tour was to begin.  Daniel agreed to come along to help with the driving and traveling but also to play trumpet with Phil at his concerts.  We realised that we played very well as a duo, and when we got back we started writing orginal music specifically for this new group to play.  Many of the songs came from lyrics that Phil wrote years ago but had never been set to music.  Daniel wrote new melodies and chord structures for these.  We also came up with new arrangements of several traditional American folk songs to play with our banjo and trumpet instrumentation.

We've already spent several thousand dollars to cover the costs of production and manufacturing of "Fly Away."  After hundreds of hours spent writing, rehearsing, recording, and mixing the album, we want people to know about it and hear it.  In order to promote our album, we need to raise $2,500.  We feel that with the music market flooded with self-produced cd's it is important to invest money into getting your music known.  That's where we need your help.

We hope that you will look through the perks that we are offering and find something that would be suitable for you.  We are offering many CDs ("Fly Away" and others by Phil and Daniel) in addition to private lessons, sheet music, private house concerts, and personalized songs in return for your donations.

We hope to meet our goal for funding this project.  We both had an amazing time writing and recording this music, and hope to share it with as many people as possible!  We are both itching to get started on our next recording, and helping us fund this project will allow us to get started on the next one right away!

Thanks,

Phil and Daniel

A Connecticut native, Phil Rosenthal is best known for his long run as lead singer and guitarist (beginning in 1977) with the popular bluegrass group The Seldom Scene. He’s also nationally renowned for his instrumental skills on banjo and mandolin, and as a songwriter and record producer. In 1986 he launched his solo career as well as American Melody (with his wife Beth Sommers), a recording company devoted to producing bluegrass and folk music for children and families. He performed around New England with his wife and two children as the Sommers-Rosenthal Family Band, which served as the primary vehicle for his prolific output as a songwriter (his “Muddy Water” was covered by Johnny Cash, Bill Monroe, and Nick Cave, among others). In 1994, the Connecticut Commission on the Arts appointed him the official Connecticut State Troubadour.

Born in Silver Spring, MD, and raised in Guilford, CT, Daniel Rosenthal early on gravitated to the trumpet, rather than the stringed instruments all around him, and figured out ways to fit the horn into the family ensemble. Louis Armstrong was a major inspiration. By 13 Daniel was gigging with a trio at local restaurants and coffeehouses, and in high school he worked on absorbing the jazz trumpet lineage. At New England Conservatory, he studied with soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonist/arranger Bob Brookmeyer, and Charles Schlueter, principal trumpeter for the Boston Symphony. Daniel joined the Either/Orchestra in 2006, and in 2011 American Melody released his debut as a leader, "Lines."
