Why Support Fly Like a Girl?
Even in our modern society, there are many barriers that still exist for women. There are so many reasons for this- socioeconomic, inequality, education, self esteem, the list goes on. A recent study in
Science Magazine found that young girls are less likely to think their own gender is smart. In order to change this narrative, it is crucial that girls and women see people like themselves, achieving great things in their fields.
It is also extremely important to bring more girls and women into aviation/STEM fields. Women make up half of the college educated workforce, yet they are significantly underrepresented in STEM/aviation fields. More specifically, American women make up approximately six percent of the pilot population. We don’t think it is too dramatic to say our future depends on bringing more women to the table of aviation/STEM. In the next 20 years our world will face a major shortage of pilots and aviation related personnel. We depend on aviation for a wide variety of reasons and this critical shortage will affect us all directly. We believe that women, their views, experiences and skills, will help find solutions to the impending aviation crisis. When you support Fly Like a Girl you will join a movement that is dedicated to empowering and encouraging girls and women.
A Message From the Director
I am a former elementary educator. It was during my time as a primary school teacher that I first developed the idea for Fly Like a Girl. I saw first hand the gap in confidence young female students felt in the classroom, especially in relation to STEM subjects. I remember one student in particular, she was struggling with a math problem. She said, “Ms. Wiatt, girls just aren’t good at math.” This student’s statement had a profound effect on me. Perhaps because it reminded me of a math teacher I had in 5th grade who told me, “Some girls, like you, just can’t do math.” I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was a very common experience for many young girls.
Around the same time, aviation and STEM education became more significant in my life. I saw Patty Wagstaff and several other strong aerobatic female pilots perform, I read a variety of books on historic female aviators, and had the honor to hear Dr. Mae Jemison and other STEM speakers. I also had the opportunity to be part of creating several films for the SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Center for Excellence. All of these moments instilled in me a passion to help change how young girls and women perceive themselves and what they have to offer to our world. I decided that aviation, with its diverse opportunities in everything from engineering to aerobatics, is an excellent vehicle to tell this story.

About our Team
Indie Atlantic Films was founded in 2006. Since that time, we have worked on story driven films across the country. Fly Like a Girl is our step into feature length films. Our team is extremely hard working and we all bring richly different skills and talents to the table. Each person on our team has already put in countless hours of developing ideas, filming, editing, and researching in order to tell the story with excellence. To learn more about Indie Atlantic and our team please visit our website.
Why are we using Indie GoGo?
This project is so important to our team that we have been self funding the production. We have already invested thousands of our own dollars and many hours in bringing this important story to life. With your help we can expand the story, include women in many diverse aviation fields, and show the incredible work that is being done across the country by women.
The funding we receive will go to 3 main sections:
-Production, Post Production, Rewards & Promotion
ProductionA percentage of funds raised will go toward the actual cost of traveling to the various locations for the documentary. The funds will help cover the cost of the production crew, gear rentals, and travel. As of now we have filmed people in our home state of Florida to keep the cost down. With your help we can expand the narrative and conduct interviews in diverse locations.
Post Production
A good portion of the funds will go toward post production cost. Here are some example expenses: Archival Photos/Video Licensing, Music Licensing/composing, Editing, Color/Audio Correction, Film Festival Submissions, Legal Fees. Our goal is to make a high quality film that will attract a wide audience of viewers.
Rewards & Promotion:A percent of the funds will go for fulfillment of the rewards and the fees for IndieGoGo / payment transactions. We will also be doing promotion of the film through social media and other outlets.
Risks & Challenges
Licensing / Legal
We know that with any creative project you can face adversity in the paperwork. Our team has worked on countless projects that involve licensing and the legality of creative works but the risk is still there. We have budgeted to cover the potential cost, but until we are deep in post production we will not know the full cost of licensing/legal fees with Fly Like a Girl. Our goal is to be fair to everyone involved and maintain clear communication.
Digital Copy Reward
Our goal is to be as transparent as possible with Fly Like a Girl. The delivery of the finished film to our backers will be determined by film festival guidelines and any distribution the film may receive. We cannot guarantee a specific date the digital copy reward will be sent out, but we can assure you our backers will always be a priority with any distribution Fly Like a Girl receives.
Film Festival Submissions
Our goal is to hit the submission season for 2018-2019 film festivals. This is doable, but with all projects any hiccup can delay the whole process. Through our online presence, we will keep everyone updated on the production and delivery of all rewards.
