ABOUT FLYQUEST
FlyQuest is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Huntsville, Alabama with a vision to awaken dreams and to provide opportunities for young people to pursue aerospace education and aviation careers. We want as many young people as possible to experience the joy of flight.
FlyQuest was recently featured in our local news. Please enjoy our video at http://whnt.com/2015/11/16/aviation-is-fun-and-maybe-a-career-too/
FlyQuest conducts its Aviation Fundamentals programs for schools and home school students, covering topics such as aerodynamics, aircraft systems, maintenance, airport operations, weather, crew resource management, and decision making. Our unique approach includes offering scholarships, which require the students to perform community service in exchange for aviation coursework or flight experience. Our one-day Aviation Overview programs also benefit community organizations such as the Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts and schools. Our field trips to local airports inspire young minds to pursue their aviation dreams.
FlyQuest has installed the first 6 Degrees of Freedom flight
simulator in North Alabama available to the public, which enhances the our
education programs and provides hands-on experience for young people interested
in pursuing aerospace education and aviation careers.
The DCX MAX FM simulator
can be easily configured for 25 single engine and 10 multi-engine aircraft and
includes a full metal cockpit enclosure, dynamic control loading, modern
avionics and a 225 degree visual system. FlyQuest’s primary use of the aircraft
simulator is to teach its students in a safe environment while providing
cost-effective, realistic flight training.
FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
FlyQuest has designed a comprehensive Aviation Fundamentals course, which is taught by FlyQuest personnel to public and homeschool high
school students, from freshmen to seniors. The unique five-day program is
spread over a semester and provides students with first-hand exposure to
aerodynamic principles and aircraft components, as well as the requirements needed to
pursue one of four aviation career fields: piloting, aircraft maintenance, air
traffic control, and airport operations. The class involves several tours and field
trips. For example, students visit Huntsville International’s air traffic control tower and experience flight with an instructor in FlyQuest’s unique 6 Degrees of Freedom flight
simulator. Our students have also met with TSA agents, baggage handlers, FBO line personnel, and airport public safety officers.
FlyQuest is currently teaching Aviation Fundamentals in one
Huntsville City High School and hopes to raise enough funds to expand the course
to all the high schools and middle schools in North Alabama. Along with
expanding to more schools, funds will be used to help underserved students fulfill
their dreams of achieving an Aviation career through scholarships and internships.
FlyQuest often identifies young people who have an aptitude for aviation through our education programs. Our team understands that not everyone can afford to pursue their dreams to achieve a career that meets their skills. For example, our first scholarship winner, Brandon Schrader, attended our Aviation Fundamentals home school course in 2014 and, through a generous scholarship donation, he is now attending private pilot ground school training at the University of Alabama Huntsville.
Scholarship awardees are required to perform community service which is a unique way FlyQuest gives back to our community. Hours required are determined by the level of scholarship access received and agreed upon by all parties when the scholarship is presented.
OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP
FlyQuest depends on the generosity of volunteers who donate their time for flight instruction, administration, and facilities maintenance. We also are looking for donations of flight training materials, computers, aircraft, and other supplies.
