Dear friends,

As many of you know, I had the opportunity of traveling to Nepal this last year for a humanitarian project with HELP International. This experience opened my eyes to the many evils occurring in the world. As part of our work we partnered with Raksha Nepal, an organization dedicated to fighting for the empowerment of women. They have rescued hundreds of girls from forced prostitution, sex slavery, and sexual abuse. Once rescued, they are placed in a safe home and receive training and therapy to regain stability and independence for a better future.

I would like to share with you the story of Sunshine. Her name has been changed and her picture has been blotted out for safety and legal reasons. Sunshine was born in a village just outside of Kathmandu. Her life was never easy, but it was about to take a turn for the worst. When she was eight, her father left to work abroad and sent money back to provide for the family. In his time of absence, Sunshine was raped by her grandfather. Confused and in excruciating pain, she went to her mother for help. Her mother, being illiterate, relied solely on the income of her husband and his father for support and housing. Fearing they would be kicked out on the streets, Sunshine was forced to keep quiet as this horrible behavior repeated itself until her father returned.

Upon the return of her father, Sunshine went to him for help. She relayed the events that had happened as he had been away. As she pled with him for help, her father committed the unimaginable–he also, raped her. The one person she looked to as her provider and protector took advantage of her in the most heinous inhumane manner. Distraught and confused, Sunshine returned beseeching her mother for help. Again, her mother forced her to keep quiet, for fear of retribution. Her sisters and brother could not come to her aid either; she was completely alone.

This abuse continued for eight years. She was forced to do things no one should ever have to do. Her parents physically and emotionally abused her. There were even periods when they wouldn’t feed her for almost a week at a time. Her father continued the abuse, telling her if she didn’t succumb to his wishes, he wouldn’t feed her or pay for her schooling.  She had nowhere to turn, and no hope in life. She felt the only way out of her situation was suicide.

Sunshine ran away to the jungle where she consumed poison in an attempt to free herself from her awful situation. By the grace of God, there was a patrolman in the area who came across an unconscious body. A note was found with her explaining everything that had happened to her as they rushed her off to the hospital. Again, by the grace of God, she regained consciousness. In the meantime, the authorities called Raksha Nepal who immediately took her into their custody and protection.

Sunshine has been living with Raksha for the past two years creating a new life. She is indeed a ray of sunshine to all those she meets. Stress, the physical damage caused by rape, and unknown effects of the poison continue to eat away her health. Memories of her abusive past still triggers her ulcers, causing them to act up, which restricts many of the activities she is able to participate in. Doctors are still unsure of what exactly is wrong with her. She developed stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems due to the stress she undergoes. As a result of the poison, her kidneys and liver are damaged. Sunshine is currently in school and enjoys learning. She is very smart and dedicated to her studies. She is studying to become a gynecologist and help those around her who have suffered as well, but her health often inhibits her from attending class.

Sunshine’s health problems are both unique and difficult as she lacks resources to obtain proper medical attention needed to address her needs. I have grown to love Sunshine as my very own sister, which is why I am seeking your help in raising funds to provide her the quality health care she needs. She really is family and I invite all of you to contribute in helping us fund her medical treatments and medicine.
