FORTUNA: / fɔːˈtjuːnə /
A Latin word meaning "fortune" or "luck." For Gabriel, it is a last cry before jumping, taken from a friend and spoken in honour of their legacy. This phrase is ingrained in Gabriel's routine and is a statement not taken lightly, even tattooed across his shoulders. For him, luck is a combination of skill and good timing. For many, these things rarely come together.
THE STORY
Fortuna is a character study that aims to understand the desire for flight in its most primitive form, all through one person's pursuit. Through this journey, we examine the repercussions of existing somewhere we don't belong, forming a relationship with death, and the consequences of its closeness.
For many of us, the idea of flight embodies ultimate freedom. Most people experience flight through a local airline—an introduction, perhaps—but some have a desire for more. The mid-2000s introduced a new concept of flying: Wing-suit BASE jumping. After a century of experimentation, the late 1990s marked a milestone when Patrick de Gayardon pioneered one of the first successful wing-suit flights. Over a decade later, with the advent of action cameras, athletes who embraced this sport could share their experiences with the world. Descending through vast alpine ranges, mere feet above the ground, gave rise to a new version of the sport: Proximity Flying.
Naturally, this sparks curiosity about what it takes to become a pilot—to understand their community, the risks involved, and the training required to reach this pinnacle of human capability. All in the pursuit of flight.
Thanks for stopping by our Indiegogo page for this exciting documentary, a short film project, exclusively created by The Cue Tube and Casa Cobra Films.
GABRIEL LOTT
Introducing Gabriel Lott, a professional Wingsuit pilot and member of a Special Operations unit (CORE) in Rio de Janeiro. Just like his work as a sniper, his perfect precision ranks him as on of the best pilots in the world. Executing and opening some of the most technical exits worldwide, including his renowned home spot, Pedra De Gavea, just 844m above sea level in the center of Rio de Janeiro.
Outside of Wingsuit flying, Gabriel is involved in a complex and violent conflict against some of South America's most powerful Organisations and Cartels. For many, It’s hard to ignore these reverberations of war as they transcend through the city, it is important to us that this is not hidden from the film. Where necessary we aim to put ourselves forward to document this conflicts impact, from an observational and neutral perspective.
We've chosen to incorporate this aspect of his life into the film because it's integral to depicting a comprehensive portrait of the city. Without grasping this context, we risk missing the genuine impact of Gabriel's experiences. His career in CORE closely mirrors that of a pilot, so delving into the parallels between both professions and his personal life is essential for a deeper understanding of his pursuit of flight
FORTUNA will become an invaluable resource for The Cue Tube's community of film composers and sound designers, available under license for use in practice, education and showreels, to showcase your skills and secure projects.
COMPOSERS!! In June 2024 we made the trailer freely available for re-scoring and reviewed re-scores on a livestream with composer Carlos Rafael Rivera. The un-scored trailer is available from The Cue Tube as part of a special promotional bundle to help raise funds for FORTUNA.
SCOPE: The documentary’s form unfolds as a 15-20 minute character study captured through a blend of Cinema cameras. The voiceover by Gabriel himself, in his native Brazilian (subtitles in English), gives a poetic, deeply personal touch and intimate view, with a compelling tension from start to finish.
Support our campaign today and help us tell this important story and create an unrivalled resource for our creative community. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
